gabrielaszalos Posted April 18, 2023 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Went to the store today to look at the new M11M. I started taking photos around the gallery, and in some conditions (couldn’t identify which), I pressed the shutter and no picture was taken. I found that really odd. I thought I was just being a newbie and not doing something right. However, playing around I noticed that when this happened, if I HOLD the shutter button down, the shutter does sound and the picture is taken, it just has a long delay. Is this the shutter lag everyone is talking about? I found it to be ridiculous. The camera was definitely not sleeping, and live view was off. Advertisement Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 Hi gabrielaszalos, Take a look here Delayed shutter action. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dpitt Posted April 19, 2023 Share #2 Posted April 19, 2023 (edited) Are you sure it did not take the picture at the moment you pressed down? It then waited until release to re-cock the shutter. This was done mainly for the first digital M models which sounded much louder. Doing it in two phases was making less noise. gabrielaszalos Posted April 19, 2023 Author Share #3 Posted April 19, 2023 I guess I'll get to play around with it more next week, as I ordered one for myself. We'll see. I will report back if anyone is interested. But since I haven't read about this problem on the forum, it's likely not a problem, or that particular piece had some fault. ramarren Posted April 26, 2023 Share #4 Posted April 26, 2023 (edited) I finally had a chance to hold and fire an M11 yesterday The different way the sensor/shutter work (the shutter is open in normal use while framing and focusing, and setting exposure, it seems to enable more sophisticated metering modes even when using the rangefinder vs using Live View) changes the shutter release to shutter actuation timing and feel a little bit slow compared to the M10-M and prior digital Ms at first use. I've owned several, if not many, EVF cameras which have a similar difference in the feel of the release press - shutter actuation timing when compared to non-EVF cameras. I've found that after a few minutes of using any of these cameras, my perception of a lag or difference disappears as the timing becomes ingrained into my 'mental musculature.' trickness Posted April 26, 2023 Share #5 Posted April 26, 2023 I’m very curious about the difference (if any) in shutter lag times between the SL2 & the M11/M11M (because I use the SL2 extensively, it has a hybrid shutter and I’ve never felt a delay/lag)
FlashGordonPhotography Posted April 27, 2023 Share #6 Posted April 27, 2023 You’re imagining it. Although widely reported the M11 isn’t significantly different to the M10 shutter delay. You just hear it and so there’s a perception of a big difference. Leica officially said the difference was less than 100 milliseconds. Much less than your reaction time to push the shutter.. So a non event. And something you acclimatise to quickly. The real difference is that on the M10 any delay is silent whereas on the M11 you hear the shutter cock. In live view mode the M11 is significantly faster than the M10 and in normal shooting less than 1/10th of a second slower. You may not like the sound though. Some don’t. There were some early firmware glitches withheld the colour M11 where under certain circumstance the shutter wouldn’t fire correctly (with exposure playback disabled) and some occasional lock ups. AFAIK, those have been resolved and I haven’t heard of any issues with the Monochrom. Mine is identical to my M11 colour. Gordon
