usccharles Posted November 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) just bought a brand new 50/1.4 R Summilux today and i see specks of dust on the internal parts of the lens. i know its not going to affect the image, but its really irritating to see this on a new lens. is it pretty easy to clean the inside of the lens (not by me but by a shop tech of course) and is this covered under leica warranty? Or is a certain amound of dust neglegible for leica? i would return the lens and ask for another but everyone seems to be out of 50/lux's these days and my shop only had one in stock. i have a coulple M lenses and R lenses. I've never had dust problems with any of my M lenses, used or new, but with the two R lenses I currently have, one used and one new, they both have dust inside. is this normal? maybe just more noticiable becaue R lenses are that much bigger? thanks in advanced Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

rick_dykstra Posted November 9, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 9, 2007 I had a lens with a smear of goo, perhaps adhesive, near the edge. I was at the importers and the techs took a look at it. The head tech guy said "Zis is nossink. I zhould not do dis, but look here." He took the lens over to a projector and held the lens in front of the light beam for me to look through. I saw more crap, dust, cleaning residue and drying marks on every element surface than I would ever have imagined possible. My concern about what I had seen earlier evaporated. Do this and you'll never worry about a speck of dust or an air bubble in a lens again. Let Leica determine at the factory that the lens is good and ready to find a happy owner and then just enjoy the pics you get. Judge the lens by what happens on film or on sensor, not by what happens in your head when you 'mis-use' the lens by looking into it. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
earleygallery Posted November 9, 2007 Share #5 Posted November 9, 2007 Its all relative, assuming these are fine specks/barely noticeable then I would leave well alone. If its a glob of dirt then I'd be minded to return the lens. Dust is a fact of life, and it will work its way into your lens no matter. Maybe if it was the last one in stock it has been taken out of the box a few times to show to people - you can't always expect to buy something that has been unopened - imagine if the dealer refused to open the box for you before you bought it!
