I just happen to find this pair of images I captured last year with SL (601). First one is SL-Summilux 50mm ASPH and the second is Sigma DG DN 50/1.4. I had the Summilux on loan but the famed Summilux did not inspired me to use it as much as I have hoped having experience with the ASPH M Summilux 50 on film Leica M body years ago.

It seems that my impression is in line with the opinion shared here by many. I think the lens requires more thoughtful approach by the photographer to take full advantage of its superior technical specification and transform it into equally superior image (unlike for example Canon RF 50/1.2 which will morph almost anything into interesting rendering). Maybe I will borrow this lens one more time to draw final conclusion and perhaps compare it to the new Sigma 50/1.2 DG DN.

To my eyes (and this may be subjective), these two images illustrate the strength of the Summilux.  The window rail, right of the cat’s ear shows the drift into an out of focus.  The impact on the cat image is that the Summilux image shows the cat “in the scene” (if you get my meaning), whereas the Sigma image has the “cut and paste” look.  The primary difference is how the in focus area rolls off, rather than stopping somewhat abruptly.

If you enlarge the window detail referred to above, the Summilux image goes gently into focus, then gently out, even with the shallow depth of field.

This is one of the reasons I keep both the Summilux-SL and the 50mm APO Summicron-SL.  Sometimes I want the almost hyper-realistic look the APO can give me.  They're both tools and you need to approach using each of them differently.

Very Nice portrait.  It that at closest focus point or can you get even closer?  I’d love to see a photo at closest focus with ears visible to see how far the fall off is on nose and ears.

These are cropped, right?

I took the image in landscape format, and cropped to portrait in 4x5 format. I did not “zoom in” while cropping.

The camera was on tripod, and I don’t have a l-bracket (on order though), so landscape format was easier for minor adjustments on the ballhead.

Normally I wouldn’t share “proofs”, but this one is an exception as Sara wanted to have two hair strays over her face. Focused on the eyes, this image shows nicely the fall off of the Lux.

Taken with the SL2 and one strobe. Image is a proof, so uncropped and basically unprocessed (so you can see all the messy hairs…).

And for reference, final images will go into this direction, though I still need to clean up some stray hairs.

Robb

I’m going to add the Q3 with the 43mm lens to my APO SL35/50 and 50 Summilux SL.  I’d like to say it’s for the same reason, but I just want it ;)
