A stunning set Mike, thanks for sharing! This one in particular is amazing and really shows off what this lens can do.

And, I would imagine this is an extremely versatile "one lens" for a safari trip (on my bucket list).

Thanks again,

Brad

Would depend on the safari, I would say. Great in a vehicle, a bit bulky and heavy on foot.

My game reserve (back garden!) has some smaller creatures.  I cheated with the fly...taken with my Sigma 105mm Macro, not at 840mm!

Yellow-throated Longclaw (Macronyx croceus) in the wild @ Zuka Game Reserve. You can see the length of its claw, hence the name.

SL2-S & Sigma 60-600mm & 1.4X TC  shot at 840mm -straight out of camera, no pp converted from DNG to JPG & perfectly sharp.

SO what’s the consensus on this versus the 150-600. My 150-600 is disappointing. I also have the Canon 100-500 and it’s noticeably better, even with a TC added. Maybe I have a dud 150-600? I would like a very good long lens for the L mount system. Is this the one?

Gordon

+1. (also having Canon RF 100-500 and Canon 400mm f4 DO v2, both working fine with eg 1.4 extender).

Looking at the 150-600 threads I would hardly describe the lens as disappointing.  Maybe there is a bit of sample variation or are you shooting the lens with a mechanical shutter? It does not take kindly to shutter slap at any shutter speed. Another possibility is that you need to calibrater. your lens:

In the never-ending search for the holy grail of long telephotos, I have the Leica VE90-280mm L which is too short for birding, however excellent for general wildlife. I've also owned the Sigma 100-400mm, then the Sigma 150-600mm which I felt was a big improvement & really had no complaints. Possibly yours was a dud?

Recently I sold the 150-600mm & acquired this 60-600mm.

Based on my daily use & experience over the last 10 days in the field, this is a very good lens. Definitely an improvement in terms of IQ, AF speed & versatility; it is heavy. As technology evolves we're seeing constant improvements in lens design, as incremental as these may be.

It's also got me thinking about which lenses I would take on safaris in future. The additional focal length from 60mm upwards is a big plus & would probably see the Leica VE90-280mm getting less use (I'm not selling this lens). The Canon 400mm f4 USM DOll  is always the first lens to go into my bag, which is without doubt the best long lens I've used in 50 years of photography.

In short, to answer your question, this is a very good lens. For a long zoom in the +400mm range, IMO presently this the best L mount zoom lens available.  Obviously it's unrealistic to make a comparison between a long zoom & fixed tele. eg. the Canon 400mm.

For my photography I try to get the best of both worlds, this is my current set up on safari, on the Land Rover seat next to me-

Mike, do you think it makes sense to go from the 150-600 to the 60-600 for a once-a-year safari guy like me? I have the CL with 55-135 as second camera. (and 2x converter ;) )

Striped Kingfisher (Halcyon chelicuti) @ Zuka GameReserve. This is a small bird about 17cm (6.5in.) beak to tail, it was about 45m to 50m away.

SL2-S & Sigma 60-600mm & 1.4X TC  shot at 840mm -acceptably sharp & good detail.

No it doesn't make sense Jaap. IMO, the changes are incremental, as I mentioned earlier. For me the biggest plus of this lens is the extra focal length from 60mm upwards.

Maybe Gordon should send his lens in to Sigma to have it calibrated? Of course you can do so yourself, but it is a bit of a hassle and Sigma service is quite good.

Very interesting post, thanks.  Please don’t tell me about the best telephoto in 50 years, I am easily tempted!  Are you using that Canon lens with the Sigma MC-21, how fast is the AF?  I did have the Leica 90-280 when it first came out but sold it and the SL in a dismally failed attempt to down size and stick to one body and one lens.  I notice you have attached the 60-600 upside down, please can you explain why.

Yes I'm using the Canon 400mm f4 with the MC-21 adapter. Only AFS is available no AFC (not a big deal for me) AF is not lightning fast, but perfectly acceptable & accurate. The IQ from this lens is exceptional.

I don't use a tripod & use a bean bag instead, I've turned the tripod collars around & use them as handles to carry the lenses.
