stuny Posted August 21, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Even though this topic has appeared before, in previous threads there was really little resolution, with as I recall no real winner. With the pace of technology development perhaps our fellow DMR users have some conclusive data, and if not that, some warnings away from certain solutions. The ideal solution for me, if it worked, considering cost, size, capacity and viewer is the iPod Video. What say you?
Advertisement Posted August 21, 2006 Posted August 21, 2006 Hi stuny, Take a look here DMR & Digital Wallets. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 21, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2006 You asked one of the most frustrating issues, sorry to say. there is only one viewr that I know of that will see our raw DNG files and view them. At least that was what was announced and i have yet to see one or find one but it is from Jobo called Gigi Pro Evolution, if you find one. Please tell us. i want one

pascal_meheut Posted August 21, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 21, 2006 I'm using a Compact Drive PD70X, i.e. a non viewer unit. Fast, easy to use, does the job. When I want to review the images, I use a laptop so I do not really need a viewer unit.
wparsonsgisnet Posted August 21, 2006 Share #5 Posted August 21, 2006 I am not a DMR user, tho expect to be an M8 user before long. Doesn't the DMR provide a jpeg with the DNG? If so, any viewer unit should be able to show the jpeg, no? For reviewing purposes, it should suffice. tnx, Bill
bradreiman Posted August 21, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 21, 2006 hi stuart-i use an epson viewer, 60 gig job. no raw view but stores them. best small lcd screen ive ever seen. you can even zoom to 400% with no digitization. really amazing screens. i use it as a sort of portfolio with a folder of jpgs to show when soliciting work. nifty gadget.....b
stuny Posted August 21, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted August 21, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Brad - I believe, as Bill Parsons asks above, that the DMR produces a jpeg along with each raw file -- Is that so? And if it is so, does your Epson show the DMR jpegs?
gdb Posted August 22, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 22, 2006 Stuart, EPSON Viewers won't work with the DNG files. You may store the file, but not view it. I once went to the "FNAC" with a SD-card filled with DNG files, and could not view them on an EPSON 2000. I also called Epson in France, and they told me that there are no indication that they would ever support DNG, even on the more expensive EPSON 4000 (this was in the beginning of this year). As Guy says, according to publicity, only the JOBO's top model can do that. But it costs 500-600 €. If you remember, while you were in Paris, we went to Vélizy FNAC to get such a wallet. It is an "XS-Drive 2 XL". 40 Gb for 190 €. It works well, but without any control on the stored files. And storing a 2 Gb SD takes about 8 to 10 minutes. Let us know your choice! stuny Posted August 22, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted August 22, 2006 Thank you, Gerard. I couldn't recall which unit you had.
stumac Posted August 22, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 22, 2006 Stuart, I use a DigiMate 2-plus 40gb portable hard drive, accepts six card types, basic display only batt condition, available memory, no of files. Not only for storing images, I find it verv handy for transfering files from computer to computer 4.5"x3"x0.8" weight 8oz. Regards, Stuart
telyt Posted August 23, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 23, 2006 Thoughts and experience with non-viewer units? Hyperdrive HD80 HyperDrive Memory Card Backup Device Uses AA batteries, comes with rechargable AA set, A/C and 12-volt chargers, can use any standard notebook hard drive, USB computer interface, reads several types of cards. I bought mine as a bare case and added an 80 GB notebook hard drive I'd gotten a good deal on. No problems whatsoever.
nemeng Posted August 23, 2006 Share #12 Posted August 23, 2006 Hyperdrive HD80 HyperDrive Memory Card Backup Device Uses AA batteries, comes with rechargable AA set, A/C and 12-volt chargers, can use any standard notebook hard drive, USB computer interface, reads several types of cards. Compact Drive PD70X BTW these are the same thing, just different names for different markets. I've been using the 40GB version since June. Works well and that it runs off AA batteries is very handy for location work. A lot of other PSDs (ahem Personal/ Portable Storage Devices) run off built-in Li-Ion batteries. Not much use if they go dead in the field. Another handy feature is that you can do card->drive copies using 24-bit verification. A bit slow, but guaranteed to create exact backup copies of your images :?)
stuny Posted August 23, 2006 Author Share #13 Posted August 23, 2006 Thanks all for your input. Some of your suggestions are not available in the US, and I don't want to take a chance on something I cannot get serviced here, so Andrew's info about the HD80 and the PD70X being the same unit is most useful. However, I'm "bumping" this message to the top to see if we have any additional input (other units, experience with the units already mentioned, the meaning of life)
stuny Posted August 27, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted August 27, 2006 Guy - It looks like the Jobo Giga Pro Evolution is shipping, but it is very pricy (Adorama in the US shows $895 for it once they have it). here's a quote from a Google search: Giga Vu PRO evolution beginning to ship, says Jobo Thursday, August 17, 2006 | by Rob Galbraith Coming Soon: The Giga Vu Pro evolution. Click to enlarge. (Photo courtesy Jobo) The Giga Vu PRO evolution photo storage device is now shipping in small quantities, says Johannes Bockemühl, CEO of Jobo AG. Distribution of the first several hundred units in Europe began at the end of July 2006, he says, while the first one hundred units destined for the U.S. are being readied to ship now. Mass production is also ramping up at the Philippines facility where the Giga Vu PRO evolution is made, though manufacturing is not yet running at full capacity.
