barjohn Posted November 9, 2007 Share #121 Posted November 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) For those of you that don't want to bother downloading and comparing, here are som side by side comparisons from LR compressed to meet the file size requirements. On the left side is the 1.107 image and on the right is the 1.110 image. Picture 1 is at 2500, picture 2 at 1250 and picture 3 at 640. Please ignore some of the camera shake as they were shot hand held at 1/6, 1/15, and 1/30th. Note these were taken from LR with no processing or development at all. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted November 9, 2007 Posted November 9, 2007 Hi barjohn, Take a look here Firmware 1.110 available on www.leica-camera.de. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
russell Posted November 9, 2007 Share #122 Posted November 9, 2007 I still get the griding/banding at high ISO and speeds less than 1/30th.
guidomo Posted November 9, 2007 Share #123 Posted November 9, 2007 To be honest John, it is difficult to ignore camera shake. If you make the effort of such comparison (which is appreciated and potentially useful), why don't you use a tripod? FWIW, I don't think there's been any change to the ISO behaviour in this update. But I still wonder what Carlos' M8 had smoked before taking the shots he showed at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/37714-leica-demo-day-dale-labs.html#post394232. barjohn Posted November 9, 2007 Share #124 Posted November 9, 2007 Look at the ISO 2500 were the shake was less (1/30 exposure) and look at the noise specks. It appears obvious to me that the 1.11 is far worse.
guidomo Posted November 9, 2007 Share #125 Posted November 9, 2007 It appears obvious to me that the 1.11 is far worse. I can see no difference that I would attribute to the in-camera processing.
simon_hughes Posted November 9, 2007 Share #126 Posted November 9, 2007 I'm getting really energetic scrolling on one body while the other is fine. I'm pretty sure they both originally did the mad scroll thing, so all in all, not an overly exciting update as far as this bug is concerned. Ho hum! orjanf Posted November 9, 2007 Share #127 Posted November 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think the difference is due to the shift in color balance. I did a screen grab and made some slight adjustment to the color balance of the 1.1 version (again using lightroom). I think the difference is less marked although there is still more chroma noise in the 1.1 version. This could well be due to the jpg conversion. If you still have a camera with 1.07, it would be interesting to see a repeat with manual setting of both ISO and exposure They could have made changes to the algorithm that have unintended effects. barjohn Posted November 9, 2007 Share #128 Posted November 9, 2007 They were shot with the same lighting so the shift in color balance was firmware induced if any. I did no processing on the files and the originals are posted for download. You are looking at a screen capture from LR using the LR compare feature which is before any image is put in develop mode. It would appear that other than possibly fixing the operation of the scroll wheel, and adding support for lenses none of us have yet, nothing else of significance was accomplished in either 4 or 8 months depending on how you count upgrades. At this rate the M9 will be on the market and we still will not have all of the issues fixed. I guess, as some other posters have mentioned on why we put up with this, it pays to be the only game in town.
guidomo Posted November 9, 2007 Share #129 Posted November 9, 2007 I had noticed the WB issue and that might make a different in noise perception for some people. (The WB has always been erratic, it has not changed in the firmwares AFAICS.)
barjohn Posted November 9, 2007 Share #130 Posted November 9, 2007 Here is the ISO 2500 shot with WB adjusted. Left side =1.07 and right side = 1.110 Welcome, dear visitor! orjanf Posted November 9, 2007 Share #131 Posted November 9, 2007 Here is the ISO 2500 shot with WB adjusted. Left side =1.07 and right side = 1.110 Thank you for the trouble John. I feel somewhat reassured. The difference is much less and I think the fact that the 1.07 version had 50% longer exposure will account for the rest. cme4brain Posted November 9, 2007 Share #132 Posted November 9, 2007 Running on my M8s now Here is a testament to the red-eye reduction now available on the updated software. Here is a self portrait taken at my arms length with a crummy fish eye 8mm lens on the M8. Flash is from the Leica SF 24D at point blank range. NO RED EYE. It does not get better than this. mhoersch Posted November 9, 2007 Share #133 Posted November 9, 2007 My chrome body occasionally still zooms out instead of in when I turn the wheel clockwise. Mad scrolling seems to be gone.
