No doubt I will be subjected to yet another round of the argumentum ad hominem favoured by some of the less articulate forum members, but am I really alone in believing that (a) the D2 is a very good camera indeed and (B) that Leica, by offering a substantial discount, had attempted to the right thing in respect of those who were badly let down by their previous purchase of the D2?

It would be useful to hear from members who own or have experience of the D3, rather than from those who merely dislike it because it is different from its predecessor.

"I don't want to laugh, but when I first looked at the D3 I just wondered who was this idiot

who designed this monstrosity." I'm sure some Leica fanatics said the same thing about the M5. Time to wake up and smell the coffee, try new things (some will work out and some won't but no reason to stop trying) and keep pushing the envelope.

I have bought some silly things in my life, but certainly not anything in the likes of the D3.

Coffee, it smells nice, but taste awfull, no thank you

Frankly, I prefer Tea please.

Cheers.

I have a Sony DATman somewhere. In fairness this was sometime before PCs started to be able to record digitally.

I think my worst purchase ever was a Dodge Shelby Charger. Gods what a POS.

But DAT... isn't a bad format. You can still buy new DAT recorders. Amazon.com: SONY TCDD100 - 10th Anniversary Datman DAT Player/Recorder: Electronics I guess the format is dead though... Sony don't play DAT - Engadget

"I jumped at the chance to get rid of the D2 when my sensor failed and have not regretted that decision once. The D2 is a toy in comparison."

"No doubt I will be subjected to yet another round of the argumentum ad hominem favoured by some of the less articulate forum members, but am I really alone in believing that (a) the D2 is a very good camera indeed.........."

...cum tacent, clament...

I'm not sure which side of the canal you are batting from here; firstly you say that the D2 is a toy and then state it is a very good camera indeed and then you have the temerity to infer that "some" of the forum members are less articulate than yourself.

For some reason which I cannot explain the expression "complete tosser" springs to mind, can't think why.

Please do post some of your snaps. :)

OK - Someone please, please help me figure out just what is going on here.

A rebadged Leica camera that is a *niche* product ( I know, a tiny niche of an extremely small niche - Leica users) is getting soundly thrashed for no apparent reason.

It is the first digital SLR Leica has put their name on - works with lenses from other manufacturers - even R glass with an adapter (gasp!)

It also doesn't appear to be plagued by the same issues that either the Digilux 2 (which is a great camera even with its limitations) or the M8 have battled through, with mixed results.

The production run for this DSLR is small - and is priced higher than the Panny equivalent (like ALL other shared cameras between the two companies) and so the attempt to shift some units before new models surface now appears desperate?

If you've shot with a Digilux 3, you're more than entitled to your opinion. But if you simply stand by the sidelines and consider this tool a failure, then you're sorely mistaken.

I guess in that case, you can wait for Photokina 08 and see what *REAL* Leica DSLR is in store...as if that really mattered.

It should be obvious from the context that the "D2" above should be read as "D3". In other words a typo, unfortunate, but it happens. I admit I did not spot it until you kindly pointed it out, with the very best of intentions I am sure.

Apologies to all those who were similarly confused.

If you look at the responses to my original post you will see exactly why I used the term "inarticulate". Your own tends to confirm that observation, with the added bonus of a gratuitous insult.

As for posting my "snaps", as you term them, I cannot see the relevance to the subject of this thread. My talents or failings as a photographer have nothing to do with the points I was making. My "qualifications" for commenting on these two cameras and comparing them rest simply with having owned and used both. Enough I would have thought, coupled with some 40 years of using other Leica

cameras, to entitle me to express an informed opinion.

Incidentally, your Cicero tag seems singularly inappropriate, given that my not remaining silent in the face of a barrage of bullshit was what prompted you to respond in the first place.

Yes, I think the outbreak of Latin slogans is a tad pretentious... and I studied it for more years than I care to remember. I do remember the class perked up when the notes for one line from Ovid's Metamorphoses suggested the translation of a particularly obscure line should be "They enjoyed the intercourse". I'm pleased to hear it, LOL. Appealed to my 13 year old puerile sense of humour (Did you like the use of puerile, from the Latin puer, m, boy?)

In time, the name D3 will come to mean Nikon's ground-breaking full-frame Digital SLR, not Leica's warmed-over Panasonic clunker. For now, it allows them to claim they have a Digital SLR but as soon as the R10 is ready, it should be put out of its misery.

By strict definition, a SLR is a photographic imaging instrument that currently uses an automatic moving mirror system and viewing pentaprism, which is situated between the lens and the film plane to direct the light reflected from the subject's image, then passing through the attached lens, with the light being reflected by the 45 degree angle mirror to the optical pentaprism, where the light is again reflected two more times until it passes through the viewfinder lens.

The Digilux 3 uses a porro mirror and doesn't have a pentaprism, in the sense, Leica never had a DSLR in their lineup till now.

...............................hmmmmm......40 years........no images to qualify statements, makes one wonder though :)

I am not sure if I am following this point. Am I to understand that my Rollei 6006 only becomes an SLR when I put a prism on it?
