In any case, I consider the noise at high ISO values a serious limiting factor for low light photography using the M8.

Ruben,

Do you feel it has got better with the various firmware updates. Sometimes I feel it has, sometimes I am not sure. 2500 ISO is still pretty unusable for colour shots, with both chrominance and luminance noise very prominent. However, in comparison to some other cameras, if you convert to black and white, the noise is quite grain like. Now why we should consider that is acceptable I am not sure but maybe it's because we have become acclimatised to grain on B&W pictures over the years and may even think it is "artistic".

In my opinion any camera on sale in 2008 must offer clean ISO 1600, with good tonality and good dynamic range. I can accept a clean ISO 1250 instead. However, the M8 has an acceptable ISO 640. This means you haven't even clean ISO 800.

Kaufmann says CMOS-based cameras use software processing, and I doubt it. On the other hand, you need software post processing for the M8 files in order to make them usable at ISO 1250 and sometimes at ISO 640.

I normally shoot dng and manage my photos in Adobe Lightroom. But I think when I have to shoot at ISO 1250 and 2500 I get less noisy images when I shoot Jpegs.

Then I can use the chroma noise slider and get rid of chroma noise altogether, which never works shooting dng.

It also seems to me, that if I have to adjust the white balance in post - even when I shoot dng - the noise gets a lot worse. Therefore I try to do manual WB when I shoot in artificially lit interiors.

Some shots from Maine - JPG's. The interiors were at 1/30, f. 2, mostly 28 f2.8 or 50 cron, ISO 640.

Lightning was at iso 1250, about 1/12 sec. handheld on window ledge.

I also see the noise at high ISO and the max. ISO 2500 as the M8's limiting factors for available light. To put that into right context, 2 years ago, when the M8 came to market, this were good values, but today the borders are clearly defined by cameras like the D3.

I would love to see 2 options for an M8 upgrade/new model.

1) ISO as good and high as in the D3 - still crop sensor

2) finally FF sensor with same ISO as D3.

As one can see empirically here, most of the posted images where shot at ISO640 with the M8; just speaks by itself that 1250 is not good, 2500 really bad, both 1250 and 2500 kill any higher resolution from your lenses.

On the other hand, and that seems to confuse some people, 1250 can look good if there is plenty of light; that is true for all camera systems - high ISO is very acceptable for reasonable light levels.

Posted image at ISO 320, f1.4, 'lux-35;

not really a low light situation, but has a similar feel.

ISO 2500 in the Moet champagne cellars in France. Yup, it's noisy, but quieter than Delta 3200. Noctilux by the way.

Really? Not my experience but your exposure has to be spot on and you need to know how to process in CS3. Not saying I would print to A2 but I could probably get a perfectly acceptable A3 print from the originals.

Oh, and a first class lens which is sharp wide open also helps.....

Some lenses seem better than others with the higher ISO's. I cannot think of any logic behind that but it seems the case. Attached is an example with the WATE at 18mm. Even looking at zooms of this image on PS, there is not a lot of noise. As Biglouis said, more light and the noise goes down. Image is of the sole remaining Tangye triple expansion steam water pumping engine at the Brede water pumping station near Hastings in Sussex.
