skimmel Posted November 26, 2007 Share #102 Posted November 26, 2007 My youngest, ready for a school event when they had to dress something like children in the war years! M8 + Noctilux, ISO 1250, f1, 1/90th sec Paul: I have to tell you, this is an amazing shot! Not sure what it is (lighting, composition with the handrail at the diagonal, the eyes..), but it just draws the viewer in! Really nice work!

Jamie Roberts Posted November 27, 2007 Share #104 Posted November 27, 2007 Just a teaser. Ok, sometime I love to photograph with my M8... But if it comes to available light or as much as no light and a professional job... Here comes my Canon 5D with 1.4/24 wide open, 1/12s, 3200Iso, plus 1,5 step in C1 so I´m higher than 6400Iso. Nightlife in a Bar in Addis Abeba. No way a M8 could have handled this... Well, I love my 5d and all, but honestly, in light like that I'd be shooting a Noctilux if the FOV would take it.... otherwise you're right; there's nothing like the 24 1.4 in the current M lineup. I suppose, in a pinch, the CV 28 1.9 would be closest. But there's something about the Nocti in low light wide open that is just so convincing. I love that lens more and more in low light. So at ISO 1250 and f1, you're essentially at the same exposure as the 5d at 3200 (ok a little less. But not much). And if it's a professional job, then there's always other light available

One of the reasons I got the M8 was to be able to use the Noctilux which is 2/3 the weight of the Canon f/1.0. Next week will add another tool to my low light kit. farnz Posted December 7, 2007 Share #108 Posted December 7, 2007 John, Your ribbon sculpture is superb and really produces the effect of blowing in the wind; thanks for posting. Interesting to see the available light night and day differences too. Pete.
Jamie Roberts Posted December 7, 2007 Share #109 Posted December 7, 2007 Jamie, I'm a low available light shooter and next week should be able to see just how the Noctilux on the M8 stacks up to the 5D with Canon's EF 50/1.0. One of the reasons I got the M8 was to be able to use the Noctilux which is 2/3 the weight of the Canon f/1.0. Next week will add another tool to my low light kit. Hey John...I think you're going to be pleased. I'm comparing working with the Noctilux on the M8 and the Canon 50 1.2L, which is also a great lens. But the 501.2L, which I have to emphasize I do love, doesn't have the mojo the Noctilux in very low light. I've talked with people about this, and Putts provides a clue here; the Nocti just seems so flare resistant wide open that the contrast marries perfectly with low light. sliversurger Posted December 7, 2007 Share #110 Posted December 7, 2007 i just gotta thank all of you for your thoughts on this. i just purchased an M8 and getting use to it. like someone posted here, i have to get the DSLR mentality out of me! i'm an available light shooter myself and i'm finding more and more first hand just how amazing the M8 is for this kind of photography. i currently have the summarit 35 2.5. just wondering what lens you would recommend for low light shooting, balancing cost vs performance? bradreiman Posted December 7, 2007 Share #111 Posted December 7, 2007 i just gotta thank all of you for your thoughts on this. i just purchased an M8 and getting use to it. like someone posted here, i have to get the DSLR mentality out of me! i'm an available light shooter myself and i'm finding more and more first hand just how amazing the M8 is for this kind of photography. i currently have the summarit 35 2.5. just wondering what lens you would recommend for low light shooting, balancing cost vs performance? you could look on ebay for an old summarit 50 f1.5. they usually go for really cheap. then there's the canon 50 f1.2 also a steal on ebay. I paid less than 400usd for each of these lenses on ebay and while not perfect they both have unique light gathering capabilities. then there's the noctilux of course or the summilux 35 f1.4 in a wider fov. of course the voigtlander nokton 35 f1.2 at around 800usd is a great deal and i really like this lens, a little big but smaller than a nocti....so lots of options on the inexpensive side-good luck....b
