Q2 with handgrip on tripod

I often use my Q2 on a tripod in combination with a Sirui mounting system. I also have the original handgrip mounted on my Q2. To securely mount the Q2 on the bullhead of my tripod I use the small Sirui TY-C10 plate. This makes a quick and secure mounting/demounting of the Q2 on the tripod possible. The problem is that the plate blocks the big screw of the handgrip. I have to demount the plate to be able to reach the battery and/or memory card compartments. In my view this is simply a design weakness. (Another designers weakness is that the screw-hole in the handgrip is not central to the lens (as it in on the camerabody). I have to use several accessories to correctly mount the camera in central position on the tripod).

To make the access of the compartments easier I have cut a small piece of thin (sheep)leather (0,2-0,4 mm) and put it under the plate. Now the Sirui plate fits solid on the camera body and the screw of the handgrip can be used without each time having to demount the Sirui plate.

I have two handgrips. The Leica one for everyday use but also the JJC one for days when I have a tripod with me. Not only does the JJC have access to the card and battery but also a tripod bush and an Arca "slot". The Leica is every day as I prefer the grip size.

Similarly, I chose to use the Lim’s grip because it has a built in Arca plate and allows access to the SD card and battery. As it happens, I use exactly that Sirui plate on my M11 when I plan to use a tripod and screw it on at 90 degrees to the usual direction to allow access to the battery.

I hope Leica reads this post. The actual handgrip can and should be improved I'd say:
1. access to the battery- and card compartment.
2. central position of the tripod screw.

Let's see what's happening.

FYI, the JJC HG-Q2 costs £50 in the UK. Significantly cheaper than the Leica one.

PS: the Arca Swiss bit allows me to lock straight onto my tripod head with no other adapters or plates.

I am around cameras all day (work at a large photo retailer).  Many tripod sockets are off set…a lot of ‘stuff’ in that camera body that dictates where they can put socket.

Thanks, but big competitors (Nikon, Sony, Canon etc) place the screw central to the lens also in their batterypacks etc. and that is much easier. The body of the Q2 has a central screw, why not the handgrip? That is an illogical design thing!

That is true for interchangeable lens cameras.  But check any fixed lens cameras such as this Sony R100 and they are all offset.  Leica M’s and SL’s are centered.  They have to take the lens into account.

You're right.

But can you explain the logic of 'moving' the central screw to non-centric on the handgrip. For a professional Leica Camera switch from centric to eccentric seems strange to me. Especially if there are (cheap) competitors to the Leica Handgrip that have a centric screw.

I'd like to hear the comment (arguments) of the Leica designers. Maybe then I understand the why.

this is great.. i saw someones q2 with the leica grip today and my first reaction was one of mild disbelief that they'd make something where you have to take the whole damn thing off to change a card or battery..!

I have used an RRS L-Bracket with handgrip that allows full access to the memory card door and the battery.  It works well in landscape or portrait mode for the Arca Swiss mount.

B&H still show them as available.
