lazybatusu2 Posted October 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've been using leica film slr camera for a decent time and i have to say that i'm still loyal to leica as i'm buying my first professional digital camera. and according to my low budget not i'm considering between used digilux-2 or the brand new v-lux. Both of them is value within the similar price range. which one should i get. i know digilux-2 is considered a higher range camera and cannot be compared to the compact v-lux. which one would be more reliable and valueble in the long run? i don't know whether i should go for brand new freshy bottom of the line one or an old charm. thank you Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

ajthornbury Posted October 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2007 I haven't any experience with the V-lux 1, but I do own a Digilux-2. This camera is a delight to use and is my favourite. Excellent picture quality, easy to use menu system an a unique method of setting lens apertures on the lens barrel like cameras of old. Many consider it to be a design classic. Sensor issues apart it is a reliable camera. Leica are currently replacing faulty sensors free of charge even to second users. Hope my comments are helpful Alan . JasonSF Posted October 30, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 30, 2007 Hi, I had a digilux 2 until 4 months ago when I upgraded to digilux 3. The D2 was fantastic! I would strongly recommend to anyone. stuny Posted October 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 30, 2007 I love my over 3 1/2 year old Digilux 2, and brought it along on my recent trip to Namibia & Botswana both as backup to my DMR, and to cover the 35mm equivalent focal length range of 28-90, while keeping a 2X extender and 80-200 on the DMR to have greatest speed and versatility (seldom had to change lenses). The D2 still performs exceptionally well, but many times I would have liked the tele end of its focal length range to be longer. We spent a few days with another two couples, one of whom was using the V-lux 1. Its greatest advantage was the tele end of its range (420MM equivalent), but its wide end (35mm) was not. Therefore, I think you need to consider what you plan on shooting -- the D2 is limited for wildlife, but otherwise a very fine camera. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
elansprint72 Posted October 30, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 30, 2007 Stuart makes excellent points about the range of the lenses of both these cameras (which are totally different in character from each other). I own both and see them as complimentary pieces of kit; I seldom take out one without the other. My 15 yr old Son has just got the Panasonic FZ-50 version of the V-Lux and is producing some really good images as an absolute beginner, stuff I would not even have thought of trying. My advice- get both, D2 off e-Bay, and maybe the FZ-50 if money is tight. btw, the V-Lux1 and FZ-50 are not exactly the same, the body is a slightly different shape and I understand that the in-camera electronix are different. dugby Posted October 30, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 30, 2007 Further to the previous responses, I suggest a Panasonic L1 (which is the DNA donor to the D3) could possibly also fit it into a D2 budget. The L1 has been selling for between USD999 to 1300, whilst D2 also sells for USD800-1100 The L1 brings Optical Image Stabilisation, which is a significant technology break-through for low shutter-speed images. Also L1 images have less digital noise and higher resolution than those of the D2 (I own and use both cameras). I might also advise you if you proceed with a D2, make sure you research on this forum, and understand the D2 sensor failure issue, and how it's being handled by Leica.
