This may have been discussed previously, but I am looking for help in opening the SL2-S firmware version 4.0 (and likely other firmware updates from Leica) on my MacAir computer.  The file extensions are .lfu, which my computer is not "accepting", asking for an app to do this.   I am unable to locate an app that will work with this file extension.  Suggestions on how to open the firmware so that I can move it to an SD card are most welcome!   In the meanwhile, I'm using firmware version 1.0 for the SL2-S.  Not optimal.

why would you want to "open" the file?

I can get the file into the download section, and I moved it to the SD card as per the instructions.  But it does not register in the camera information/firmware section.  The message “no firmware file” comes up.

You downloaded the wrong firmware. 4.0 is for the SL2. SL2-S firmware is 3.0.

I downloaded version 4.0 for the SL2-s.  I copied it onto a re-formatted fast, 128gb SD card.  Into the camera SD 1 slot, nothing in the SD 2 slot.  Then turned camera on and went to firmware area of the menu to update. Then got message “no firmware found on SD card.

If you downloaded the file multiple times, its name gets mangled with a number so the previous download does not get overwritten.
Can you share the exact name of the firmware file?

SL2-S40_ (1).lfu.   That's the file.  Tim Ketzer from Leica Customer Service sent me a link after I mentioned my problem.  But the same "no firmware found" message persists.  I downloaded the 4.0 file before his link, and that file is SL2_S40.lfu.  File sizes are identical (116.5 mb)

The name is the problem. The firmware file on the SD card has to have the name SL2_S40_.lfu. Any other name will not work.

Still getting same message after deleting the first file, re-formatting the SD card, then adding the SL2-S40_.lfu file.   The camera does not read a firmware file on the card.  Strange.   Perplexing.

That is strange. Sounds like you are doing it right. Just to be sure, the SD card was formatted in the camera, yes?

The only other thing I can think of is that you are trying to go from version 1.0 to 4.0. Maybe that is too big a jump. You could try updating to version 2 and see if that works.

The problem was my carelessness in adding the firmware update file to the SD card.  As noted in the "Preparation" column of the Notes file that describes the detailed procedure (posted by frame-it, above), the file should just be added to the card, not to a subdirectory such as DCIM or Private.   That was my error.

Simple carelessness.   All is good.
