White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) on a flat grey early evening @ Zuka Game Reserve South Africa   -SL2 & VE90-280mm

These vultures are highly endangered. Over the past 25 years they've suffered a devastating population decline of approx. 90%.  All human-related, primarily deforestation (loss of nesting sites) & poisoning incl. from pesticides.

That's the most beautiful vulture ever, even though that sounds like an oxymoron.

Seriously, what a gorgeous bird. And your report on their extinction rate is heart break. But honestly, we are on our way to our own extinction.

There have been five mass extinction events in the history of this planet and most experts agree that we are now already in the process of a sixth. We won't be around to confirm or disprove this, but I firmly believe it's going to wipe us out within 100 years.
