Laki Posted October 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2007 there was some time back a thread about those, as far as i remember none of them supports the raws from a m8
mitchell Posted October 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 26, 2007 You can store images, but you can't view M8 DNG images on them. Best, Mitchell
Laki Posted October 26, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 26, 2007 here's one of the threads http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/36251-epson-p-5000-workflow.html
AGeoJO Posted October 26, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 26, 2007 Add small JPG to your DNG and you will be able to view them. They all have a great LCD screen but pricewise the higher end models get into the territory of laptops/notebook. Well almost, if you buy new/retail. AtelierM Posted October 26, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2007 Bill, I have a P-3000 and love it--bought it when there was a rebate. Great battery life, and the battery can be replaced. I shoot fine jpg and RAW, but you can only view the jpg. Before purchasing I discussed [with Epson] regarding a firmware update to read raw files--they said maybe later, but don't buy on the basis that it will occur. The raw files load and download with no problem and I have never lost anything. I also download music and use it rather than an iPod. I use an older set of Sony headphones when I travel and listen to music. Mikeual
doubice Posted October 26, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've had the P-2000 for close to three years now, without any problems. The screen is superb, battery life unbelievable. Will not display the M8 DNG files but, will store them and you'll be able to download them to your PC once home. I also shoot DNG + JPEG, the P-2000 will display the jpeg's. There were some posts regarding the P-2000 reliability at high altitudes (I believe at over 5000 meters), but apparently when brought 'down to earth', all was well again. As dpreview would say - "Highly Recommended" Best, Jan
bayerische Posted October 27, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 27, 2007 My cousin have the p2000 model, and think highly of it. I never bought a storage device, partly because SD cards are very cheap, and one more thing to drag around with all the risks and comfort issues this brings... During a recent trip I brought 1 SD card, and bought 2 during the trip. I had a laptop with me, but this was not for pictures, it was for comfort/entertainment/keeping in touch. I don't have time to review my pictures while traveling. And I guess a P2000 is best while traveling. I have a perfectly good computer and screen at home to really work and see my pictures on. Why bother with an over priced 3,5" screen? Just my 0.02.
Olsen Posted October 27, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 27, 2007 There is no way around some kind of storage device if you travel for long duration of time and shoot a lot. I use a P2000 and shoot both jpg/DNG on my m8 and jpg/RAW on my 1Ds II and feed the files into the P2000 every day and charge it whenever I have AC available. Epson's P-series does not read DNG's, but there is another German storage device that does, supposedly. This one: JOBO AG - Giga vu pro evolution Jobo claim that this device do read 'Leica Files', but can only read CF cards! Then you need a, optional adapter, a card reader or use a cable between the camera and the Vu Pro.
stunsworth Posted October 27, 2007 Share #10 Posted October 27, 2007 Why bother with an over priced 3,5" screen? I guess it could be useful if you wanted to show the snaps to people without having to have prints made. One thing about the P2000, it's glacial when copying files. I tend to set it going, put the device back in the bag, and check the progress every couple of minutes.
Bill W Posted October 27, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted October 27, 2007 Thanks for the info. The Samsung device is as much as a Macbook. I already have a Macbook but do not always like to travel with it.....
smsmd Posted October 27, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 27, 2007 Hi Bill, As said above, the M8 DNG is stored, but not visible. I am using a basic jpeg with the DNG so I can see what I have. I've had no issue downloading from the SD card directly into the Epson. I just contacted Epson a week ago and was told no firmware upgrade is in sight to allow us to see the DNG. I spoke to the Leica rep and they are aware of the issue. Thanks, steve
