I am on the fence. I need a push off. Help me. Provide photo examples. Especially the 25mm f/1.4. Is this camera okay for weddings? A friend asked me to help her out. Not a lot of money available for the wedding. Thanks

Frank - I haven't done a wedding with my D3 yet, but I have had one or two portraiture assignments and the camera has performed extremely well. I don't have the 25/1.4 lens yet, but here are some results with the Panaleica 14-50 (image1 & 3) and the Olympus Zuiko 50-200 (image 2). The images were processed from RAW using PS Elements 4.0.

I recently purchased the 25 Lux when it was in stock at B&H and use it with my D3. It is very well balanced with the body and provides the viewfinder with a bright and sharp image. If funding is tight and you do not object to the "W" they are offering (on their web site) the D3 cousin, the Lumix L1k with 14-50 for $998.00. Trick or Treat!

I love my D3 as I did my D2. I have purchased the R adapter as there were no fast long D lenses. I am only an amateur, but love the colours and tones. The photos look much more 3d than my friends' similar Canon/Nikon.

Hi Frank,

I think you also have to consider the ergonomics of the camera if the user is comfortable holding it in which he or she can only answer. To me this is equally important to the IQ as basis of your choice.

To me the retro design is very appealing which is a big factor why I bought this camera hoping the IQ will be good in which fortunately it is indeed.

Some of my photos for you to check, hope you like it:

A much appreciated thread. I have a D3 on the way after my D2 sensor failed. These images are making me feel very good about going with Leica's offer of a D3 with some cash instead of the D2 sensor replacement.

NEWS FLASH! - as I write this the mail room at the college where I teach just delivered my D3. Too cool! Hopefully I'll have some posts up later this weekend.

Frank, here are 2 of the first images I took after buying the kit. Both hand held, late night (very low light) manual focus. I don't think it's fair to judge the system from other's photos, however. If you loved your D2 like I love mine, I think this a great tool. YES, it's bigger, but not much heavier. The viewfinder takes some adjustment, but the more I spend time with her, the richer the reward. Let's face it, the glass is great, the system complex or easy with Auto Everything. This is a STANDARD, like it or not. There will be lots of product to this standard, some better than others, but the box is great!! Take the plunge, the water's fine. It would nice if other D3 users had more details to share. Ben

Brian - extremely nice images. Thanks for the link. How's the noise at 800 and 1600 from your perspective?

Frankly - not that good, particularly 1600. Remember that I shoot RAW 99.9% of the time, so 800 is just about useable and I find it acceptable if one is intending a B&W end result. Most of the time I use 200.

I also find the kit 14-50 remarkably good. I would venture to say that it is pretty well on a par with the D2's Vario-Summicron.

Jason,

how do you like the adapter...

do you have the leica version..or another ?

do you get "focus confirmation" ?

what mode do you use the camera in ?

thanks

Rich

The adapter is great! I bought the genuine Leica version. I have just bought a lovely 80mm 1.4 R lens and it is breathtaking. The focus confirmation works very well. I also use an older Leitz 180mm 2.8. To be honest. I have found myself using the R lenses more than the stock autofocus zoom. Something about the colours and tones. I also have an Oly 35-150 AF zoom. I am not that impressed with it though, does not always shoot in focus and hunts on almost every shot. I have started using the camera more in Manual mode. For sport I use shutter mode and for generally everything else Aperture mode.

I don't know about Frank but I'm convinced. Shame I don't have any spare cash at present...... and too many cameras in the first place!
