Laharrier Posted February 2, 2023 Share #1 Posted February 2, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’ve looked around the forums a bit for info on this, and realize production info is well documented on the mark I and II Leicaflex but haven’t been able to find anything regarding the SL bodies. Obviously these were sold plentifully in black chrome but the black paint versions appear to much less common, bordering on rare. Anyone know anything specific? Advertisement Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 Hi Laharrier, Take a look here Black Paint Leicaflex SL?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
derleicaman Posted February 2, 2023 Share #2 Posted February 2, 2023 Black paint and silver chrome were the original finishes offered. Black chrome came along later. I have an original SL Black Paint purchased new by my dad. It was my most used camera when I got serious about photography. We also had a silver chrome. When I started collecting back in the 80's, I acquired a Black Chrome one, as well, and an SL2 Mot and a Chrome Standard. I will see if I can get some idea of numbers produced for you. This was one of the inspirations for the LHSA Black paint camera that I helped make happen with Leica back in 2000.

Mine certainly looks like black chrome (no brassing or noticeably wear). Wilson

willeica Posted February 16, 2023 Share #11 Posted February 16, 2023 Some of you may enjoy this story about the two Leicaflex cameras of Queen Elizabeth II, one of which she did not receive. See bottom of left column, right column and the small piece which are from Laney's book. The last photo from Lager's book shows the camera which she actually did receive from Wetzlar. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! There were some black paint Leicaflex cameras before the SL was introduced. However, any time I have seen photos of Queen Elizabeth II with a Leica, it was always a chrome one (I stand to be corrected on this, of course). Back then I am sure that the black paint 'fetish' had not yet reached the heights it has reached today. When chrome Leicas were first introduced in the 1930s they were more expensive than black lacquer items. The above came to my attention when someone sent an enquiry to Leica Society International last week about black paint versions of the earlier model. Leica did not do “specials” back then
