Back to digital - M11 (some thoughts + question re: Fotos Cable)

Having used M system since 240P, got a M10 and didn't like the color, switched to film MP, and got scared of the film price today (and the MP scratches my film :(), and finally pulled the trigger for a new M11. Having used it for a bout a month, here are some of my thoughts:

Pros:

  • lighter!
  • ISO64 enables wider aperture in the sun
  • Fotos App
  • Like the new base plate and battery and internal memory.
  • 60mp is nice to have and provides flexibility to crop in is so great. I can finally glue a 35mm to my camera live with it. With previous 24mp bodies, I mostly use a 50mm and there are times I need to change to a 35.
  • Simplified packaging
  • Feels Leica is dropping some of its "pretentiousness" and actually trying to make the camera more pleasant to use.

to be improved (as of FW1.6):

  • at 60mp the camera really needs some stabilization. if not 5 axis at least 3 axis like Ricoh did to the GRs
  • Add front curtain electrical shutter so the shutter can be more responsive. I can't say the current implementation is laggy but the sound not pleasant.
  • All time censor metering is good but WB is all over the place
  • Digital crop should be linked with the frame lines or at least has some kind of indicator in the OVF.
  • Assembly quality still got room to improve (at this price!). E.g. my rangefinder patch isn't perfectly aligned vertically. It's better than my MP but still a hair off. Not sure about the rangefinder accuracy. Some of the photos seem to back focus a bit but it could be focus shift of those vintage optics.
  • Not sure about FOTOS cable. I want to use it as remote control but only the supplied Fotos Cable works. Other MFi cable does not connect (tried Apple l-c cable supplied with the iPhone and a Belkin cable). I'd be surprised if Leica uses a proprietary cable for iPhone connection. Can anyone confirm if any 3rd party cable works?

I very much enjoy taking photos with a rangefinder. I am not taking photos for a living so the feel is most important to me. Otherwise I would definitely turn to be a Nikon or Fuji user. Even if the big brands' QC do not supersede, they offer instant service. I can't imagine if I was using Leica digital M for professional use and need to wait for months to get it serviced when something went wrong (and it does).

I use wifi only with Foto either transferring files or as a remote. I found wifi is actually more stable than a physical cable.

I’ve also only used Wi-Fi so far. 5G Wi-Fi is actually faster than Apple lightning (usb 2.0). But I can imagine I’d want to use a cable just in case Wi-Fi fails or I want to save battery out in the wild. I wouldn’t want to carry a $60 cable with me all the time.

I can think of no reason if Leica really made the cable proprietary that no other MFi would work.

it is apple approach to cables. there is a Mfi cable for charging and sync. and there is another version for accessory and data, this is the one that Leica had to use.

if you are using the FOTOS app Wi-Fi 5Gz (25sec to load raw file) is double the speed of the cable or wi-fi 2.5 ( 1min.20sec)

it does not mean the port is slow. I use the USB-C cable to connect to iPad pro to tether in capture one for iPad, the was files for 70MB takes 3-4 sec to come in.

Oh, so I need an OTG cable for Fotos? That's even more difficult to find... I just verified this with a tailor made OTG cable used for DAC connection. It worked!

I get the M11 port is USB 3.1 that's faster than 5G wifi. But I don't imagine I can use an iPad Pro for my use case (as a camera remote).

Anyway, hope Apple will move to USB C this fall and make it compatible with USB 3.x...
