One nickel Elmar originally from a 1929 Leica I (A) converted later and one regular chrome Elmar from 1954. 
Both fully extended and focused at infinity.

This is what one might expect. The shortest items are the converted ones which can be less than 29mm and the longest ones are from the 1950s which can be as much as 33mm. This is just a small example of the extent of the variations in the ‘lens that made Leica’.

Today I cleaned and regreased my nickel Elmar (with online help from a very friendly fellow). It was really, really needed! And here's also a photo of the spring inside the helicoid prior to cleaning. There was a lot of black, hardened grease inside!
