andybarton Posted August 19, 2006 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks to all of you who have been "encouraging" me to take the plunge, and those of you who haven't... Got another of life's learning experiences coming along over the coming weeks, I can feel it... I especially appreciate the help from Leica in Milton Keynes - I am sure it was the DMR edition of LFI that mysteriously landed on the mat yesterday that did it. LOL! (Thanks David) Well, went back to Bradford today and picked up the DMR. Got it home, and after half an hour fiddling with bits and pieces, and mounting two or three times... ... it works. (Note: if you have just rewound some film prior to fitting the back, you must cock the shutter first, before removing the film back and adding the DMR. If the rewind button is depressed, it doesn't seem to work. I think this may have been my problem last week.) Anyway, here's my first DMR shot. Straight from the RAW. No PS adjustment whatsoever. Not much to write a card about, but a start. I hope that the weather improves tomorrow Welcome, dear visitor! jlancasterd Posted August 19, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 19, 2006 Anyway, here's my first DMR shot. From the RAW. Not much to write a card about, but a start. I hope that the weather improves tomorrow Welcome to the club Andy! I'm sure that you will find using the DMR to be a liberating experience. Just remember to keep on taking things RAW rather than cooked...! :D
andybarton Posted August 19, 2006 Author Share #4 Posted August 19, 2006 We stick with firmware 1.1, do we not?
andybarton Posted August 19, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted August 19, 2006 First impressions? My arm aches. Second impressions? Tried a few jpgs and wasn't very happy, but the RAW files are amazing. Glad I bought a 2 gig card to go with it, though. Just learning pangs with a new toy. Now I just need to get my Aperture skills up to scratch and we are rockin' and rollin' (My wife was very unimpressed with the size of it. She compared it to my daughter's 350D... )
Guest rubidium Posted August 19, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 19, 2006 Congratulations, and best of luck with it. And stick with 1.1 for now ... Jim

dhsimmonds Posted August 19, 2006 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2006 Well done Andy! I don't think that you will regret it, just look out for ERROR 02, though I understand it is a very rare fault.....I was just plain unlucky! I just knew that you would have to get it in the end. Hope to be rejoining you again on Monday when my loan DMR back arrives.............can't wait. I'm having the same problem getting into Flexcolor, but my favourite RAW "developer" is still RSP even with the DMR. Cheers, Dave
robert_parker Posted August 19, 2006 Share #13 Posted August 19, 2006 Andy Congratulations - I'm sure you'll not look back now you're up and running !! You can always spot a DMR owner by his prehensile right fingers and far away look... Andy and Dave Don't overlook Capture 1 LE as an alternative to Flexcolour, RSP, or Apeture
jmr Posted August 19, 2006 Share #14 Posted August 19, 2006 Andy, Congratulations. You can get some practice at [thread=3259]Tatton[/thread]; you might even flog a few shots to Autotrader.

stunsworth Posted August 20, 2006 Share #16 Posted August 20, 2006 If the weather's anything like today I think Andy will need some wet weather clothing at Tatton. As someone said, this is the wettest drought in living memory :-)

Guest guy_mancuso Posted August 20, 2006 Share #18 Posted August 20, 2006 Andy congrats, now that thing will never leave your hand. If you need any help at all just ask. I have had it over a year now and thousands of images later i could not be any happier. now try Capture One with your Raws at least download the trial for it. you will be amazed how good C1 is with the DMR also if on a Mac from Iridient Digital, Raw Developer I have been playing with. now Aperture not sure we are supported yet or not, i been getting hammered from the Apple folks to try it since i just bought a MacPro Book and a Mac Pro but told them Aperture cannot see our DNG files so that got the word loud and clear from me about the DMR users out here and that message went right to the developers so maybe we will see something
stuny Posted August 20, 2006 Share #19 Posted August 20, 2006 Andy - Two more votes for Capture I (Gerard & me). It really does DMR raw conversions to TIFF exceptionally well. We both use it for conversions only, and then use other software for adjustments. Therefore, the far less expensive Capture 1 LE is sufficinet at 1/7th the price of Capture 1 Pro. Incidentally, Capture 1's human factors engineering is inferior to that of any application I've used in the last five years. Congratulations.
jlancasterd Posted August 20, 2006 Share #20 Posted August 20, 2006 Another vote here for Capture 1 to process RAW images. I'd also recommend Sandisc Extreme 3, 2GB cards and at least one additional DMR battery (I carry 2 spares) - they do tend to die very abruptly.
