Japanese architect Tadao Ando left only the original facade and perimeter Chicago common brick walls of this 1920's, 38-unit apartment building to retain the original character of the residential street. The only hint as to the surprise waiting inside is the glass enclosed 5th floor, visible only at a distance.

The entire interior structure is smooth poured-in-place exposed concrete of outstanding quality. Holes from the cone-ties are left visible and create intentional uniform patterns on the surfaces. Ceilings are made of wood slats and the original brick exterior walls are exposed to view. Polished plaster walls form the backdrop for the temporary exhibits of art and architecture.

We were lucky enough to spend a few days staying in the Museum Suite atop the Benesse House Museum on Naoshima Island by Ando - and visited the sublime Chichu gallery (gasp-inducingly “Ando-ish”), the Lee Ufan gallery and Ando’s own museum.

The Clark Art institute in Williamstown MA is also worth a visit (and closer to home if you’re in the USA)

You were very fortunate indeed to have seen all of these works by Tadao Ando. I think his work is great. He has furthered the work of Le Corbusier, perhaps even improving on it. Thanks for the link. I have only seen photos of those projects in my magazines and journals. The opening exhibit at Gallery 659 was of his work and that of Le Corbusier. Drawings and beautifully crafted models of all of his Naoshima projects were there as well as the Church of Light in Osaka.

Wally - A terrific set, and a venue we must visit the next time we're in Chicago.

Like Nigel, we too stayed at the Benesse House Museum during their Triennial art festival, making the visit all the more sweet.

Hurry up. Can't wait to see them. Architects' own offices are usually some of their best work. And done with tighter budgets!

Don't miss it. The gallery mounts a wide range of exhibits and they change a couple times a year.

Thanks, and Regards
