In such a case, sensor size and number of data to be processed would be the same, and a modern sensor could be used with a higher ISO speed and/or less noise... That might work, provided that electrically, the new sensor behaved exactly like the old. But then, are there any alternative 5 MP 2/3" sensors on the market, let alone a better one than Sony’s?
