Digilux 2 Sensor?

I have not had to replace my sensor "yet", but wonder if Leica will continue the replacement program much longer into the future. This might be a stupid question but could Leica repcace the 5mp sensor with a current 10-12mp sensor? Since they are already changing the sensor, why can't they offer an upgrade for an extra charge. It seems to me that a large number of Digilux 2 owners would love to keep this great lens with an updated sensor.

Sensor in my first Diglux 2 went bad, but my second camera (almost new) is still working. Can someone PLEASE post a direct link to the place on the Leica USA web-site that has the Sensor Replacement notification so I can get my first one repaired before the second one goes bad?

Thanks,

Larry

I have always understood that the failed sensors were part of a bad batch and that it is not a unversal problem. If there is a serial number range then everyone would know where they stand. Does anyone have the facts on this ?

The problem was created by Sony switching to a different method of connecting the sensor chip to the pins. This affected several sensors and usually all of the units manufactured; it wasn’t just a bad batch. If you own a Digilux 2, you have to assume its sensor will eventually fail, though not necessarily within the time you still want to use it.

No. For one thing, there is no 10 or 12 MP sensor available – the Digilux 2 has a 2/3" sensor, and the highest resolution sensors in that form factor had 8 MP. And even if there was such a sensor, it wouldn’t be compatible with the camera’s internal electronics.

My D2's sensor failed a couple of weeks ago. It's on the way to NJ via FED EX along with a bank check to cover the cost of the "upgrade" to a D3. I'm sorry to see the D2 go. It made some great images for me over the two years I had it. I've been shooting a lot lately with an RD1 and really enjoying the results especially in low light. I still like to use an AF camera for certain situations and am hoping the D3 will work well for me and fill that need.

Riley - gotta' wonder. They're too small to make a planter out of them. Maybe they cut out the red dot and offer up a line of tie tacks?

I suspect since they wanted the the box and goodies back too, if you have them, they fix 'em up for resale. Great lens on the D2. Too bad a better sensor couldn't have been retro-fitted to the D2 body.

I love my Digilux 2. I t is so light and the form factor is very modest. I think the B&W pre-set & RAW data output match well with the glass. I'm lost as to why so many people dis this camera. I have seen several on ebay where the listing states the camera "doesn't turn on" or "doesn't work". Is that related directly to the sensor issue? Does anyone know if Leica will repair these units if you are not the original owner? Ben

Ben,

the "not working " description could well be a sensor problem.

Whilst Leica are replacing them free of charge this should be no problem.

I have had my sensor replaced, with no problems at all. It was nice to have my D2 back in my hands and working.

I also have an Oly E410, whilst this is a very good camera I still prefer my D2.

I've been thing about getting a second D2, maybe finding a non-working one on e-bay, asking the seller if the sensor has been replaced, and also the nature of the "doesn't work", then buying it cheap and getting the sensor replaced is a good way to go?

Pete, that just why I was asking. If Leica will fix them, then it's a bargin to have a back-up D2. I've seen 2 or 3 for sale for less than $200.

Can someone point me to the link for the sensor replacement paper work..thanks in advance.

Mike, just contact your local Leica agent. They will advise you the quickest way to get your D2 repaired.

'Just a quick follow-up report regarding my D2 failure. I opted for the "upgrade" to the D3. The turnaround between the time I sent Leica in NJ my D2 and the time the D3 arrived was only about a week. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least.

I really don't think of the D3 as an upgrade, hence the quotation marks in the first sentence. It's a very nice camera and so far I'm seeing some good images coming from it. Yup, it's big and I do miss the size of the D2. I've used DSLRs before so lens gurth wasn't a very big surprise. (Keep in mind here that I do a lot of work with an RD-1.)

I do have to say that communication with the Leica folks in NJ was top shelf. They called me when the D2 arrived at their facility and were quick to respond when I questioned the missing registration card. Apparently on a trade out they register the camera for you and even mentioned I'd be shortly receiving the cute little Leica SD card wallet as a token for using Leicas. Sometimes we win. Best to all. 'Quess I better change my avatar. ;-)

That's a point I've been thinking about numerous times already. I mean, it is reasonable that a completely new sensor with a different size and/or more pixels would require new camera electronics, and I am not sure if it would be worth the presumably high price, although the lens is so great. Although, it would depend...

Nevertheless, would it be a big problem to adapt another 5 MPix, 2/3 sensor? In such a case, sensor size and number of data to be processed would be the same, and a modern sensor could be used with a higher ISO speed and/or less noise...

Just an idea

Peter - I agree completely. The lens on the D2 was great but as we all know the sensor leaves a bit to be desired. I got some great images from the D2 as long as never went above ISO200. (The speed of the D2 lens was of considerable help here.)
