35mm Summilux coding/UV IR question

Hi,

So, I am about to buy one of the 35mm Summilux lenses, non asph, last version prior to the asph version.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how well the 486 filter works? Also, does this version have any focus/coding issues?

Thanks,

First the filter. If this is one of the late version lenses, it has no filter thread. Instad, it takes a thread-less Series VII filter in the lens hood, which is in two parts and screws apart. 49mm filters are the right diameter, but most filter mounts are too deep. Extreme slim-line filters (without a front thread) may work. But B+W do not make 486 filters in this mount. (Older lenses took E41 filters, which B+W can supply.)

Second, coding. This is always advisable with 35mm lenses.

Third, lens quality. Some people may have told you tales abot "Leica glow" and such nonsense. The truth is that this was a lens whose only excuse was speed. Wide open, it splashes veiling glare and lots of coma all over the place. It is simply useless in any moderately high-contrast situation. Performance is adequate at f:4 and good at f:8, but there is always more stray light than in a pre-aspherical Summicron. Think twice.

Hand coding i don't know but Leica does not code this lens AFAIK.

Great lens otherwise, at least my late copy (#3,501,***) with R-D1 and R-D1s.

My dear old 35/2 IV tends to remain on the shelf since i've got the former last month.

Sharpness is equal or better and flare is not worse than that of the 35/2 IV at the same apertures.

Bokeh looks slightly less smooth but remains perfectly bearable IMHO.

Haven't seen any 'glow' nor coma so far but there is indeed some flare and CA at full aperture specially when light sources are in the frame.

This lens can make wonderful portraits at f/1.4 as it is very smooth at full aperture without being too soft.

Also what a pleasure to use such a fast and tiny lens which is even smaller than the little Elmarit 28/2.8 asph.

I'm fallen in love with this lens as soon as i got it.

I coded it as a 35asph lux with a sharpie (really simply), and i used a 39mm Leica UV/IR filter i put it with a circle of adhesive text in the lens border. It's a great solution if you want to maintein the original lens cap and hood of a VII serie (as mine is!).

No vignetting at all and better results than 486filter, which works fine at all!

If you need it i will post you a picture of my "tricky-mount" filter.

I must thank Maurizio for his great suggestion: I've put a 39mm B+W 486 filter and have it held by the Series 7 filter on the hood, making a snug fit. I've ordered a Series 7 UV/IR-cut filter (and a few other ones that U.S. shops just order) from foto-huppert.de, anyway.

The 39mm filter (if you have the Series 7 filter *and* the 12504 hood) works wonderfully.

I took a few test shots without the 486 filter, anyway, and with the lens detection off (effectively not setting the UV/IR setting on) there is not a single bit of IR contamination detectable in my shots. I should also say that my lens is the latest version of the pre-asph, so it mounts without an issue, either, and the claims of "softness" are duly not respected by my copy.

Maurizio,

Thank you very much for your suggestion which has totally intrigued me. I like the fact that I will be able to have a cap on since it is difficult to do so with the 12504 hood (can anyone help on how to cp the 12504 hood?)

Can you please post or send me a picture of your setup?

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Arif

I have the Titanium version and use the Leica 49mm UV/IR filter in the 12504 hood. Leica does not code it, and in my opinion no big deal, I have seen absolutely no need to code it at all. Lens performs great on the M8, and is a perfect companion to the 28 Elmarit Asph.

Thanks Arif and Gabriel,

sorry for my delayed answer.

Once you have mounted the e39 filter on you can still use the original hood and cap for the lens. While i have bought a 2,5€ front 58mm cap (snap it type) to close the hood when it is on the lens.

There's even the 58mm Nikon cap if you want to use the 12504 hood with a front cap (obviously you won't matter the NIKON logo in fornt of your M8.... :) )

here i show you some pictures.

Cheers
