Cheapside Street, Glasgow - December 2020.

A bonded warehouse once stood on this spot. On 28 March 1960, a fire ignited over a million gallons of whisky, and 30,000 gallons of rum stored here in wooden casks. 19 firemen lost their lives in the initial boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion. It took a week to extinguish the ensuing blaze. It was Britain's worst peacetime fire services disaster.

I find it amazing that, after all this time, the site still stands derelict.

Sadly, I think there are high rise residential buildings planned for the site in the near future. Thankfully there is a memorial elsewhere in the city.

Some of the pictures taken at the time of the disaster give some clue as to how frightening a fire it must have been.

Wow.  That was huge.  Firefighters amaze me - to rush into certain death.  Like falling on a live grenade.  Thanks for sharing.
