colint544 Posted January 15, 2021 Share #3303 Posted January 15, 2021 A bit of pandemic lockdown exercise yesterday. This is a spot in Glasgow, near the docks, where two disused freight railway lines cross each other. They've been out of use since the 1950's. The left side of the lower trackbed is now a cycle path/walkway. Old Victorian infrastructure always amazes me. Even though this cutting and bridge were built for completely utilitarian and commercial reasons, the brickwork on the left here is a work of art. Neat to the point of having been built with pride, and unnecessarily glazed, it still retains its shine and lustre today. M Monochrm mk1, 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE Welcome, dear visitor! British and European architecture is so much nicer and more classic than in the US. We have an occasional interesting building or civic structure, but nothing like "the old country." In fact, there was a period between 1955 and 1990 where the style could be called "Armageddon." It's as if they felt that we were all going to go up in a nuclear inferno anyway, so why bother. Then after the collapse of the USSR seemed permanent people became more optimistic and beauty returned to buildings.

Any time I've been to the U.S. I've marvelled at the brutal simplicity of much of the infrastructure. Function way ahead of form, as it should be. And one thing the U.S. has in spades is phone and power cables all over the place, threaded from poles. Man, I wish we had that here, I always think it can add so much more to a photograph than the grey empty skies of the UK. Seriously, Tim! Those cables are usually buried underground here in the UK. I think they're a great device for adding interest to pictures. This guy from Kentucky makes good use of them in his pictures over on Instagram
