Ah Dah & friend after smoking meth, Phnom Penh roof-top slum.

This Phnom Penh series is some pretty intense subject matter, a lot of which might involve photographing people who aren't keen on being photographed. How do you manage this? I'm curious how you get them to trust you enough to let you in.

It's very powerful work and you manage make a seamy side of life look beautiful. That's a real art.

It took about 20 trips over 4-5 years (using airpoints!).  I was originally supporting a disabled women’s basketball team NGO, and became interested in the way that women were treated in cambodia which then linked to drug use and prostitution. I got to know a drug dealer & pimp I met in the streets one night, a guy called AK who was a Khmer Rouge boy-soldier many years ago, and who acted as fixer so long as I paid for food and booze.  The female owner of a bar also helped out, and I would occasionally venture into derelict buildings when feeling brave. Strangely, people didn’t mind being photographed so long as you showed respect, and I enjoyed the company of the people I met. A sort of love...in New Zealand, we would use the word ‘aroha’, a kind of mystical love if that makes sense.

Taking drugs seems to be a popular social activity there, and AK told me that “only Barang smoke alone”. It was very stressful...seeing lives spiral downwards.

AK is now in Siem Reap prison. He nursed me once for a few days when I went down with a very bad fever; something I’ll always be thankful for.

.............

ps:  I used my MM1 initially but found it hard to take photos at close range with wide angle lenses while crouching or sitting on the floor so switched to the Q when that came out.

Well, I have to say your time was well spent because you came away not only with an understanding of a lifestyle most of us only read about, but withs powerful series of outstanding documentary photographs. My congratulations

I agree. In my opinion however, the series would have deserved a separate thread. Context is of utmost importance for meaning, interpretation and reception of text and images and I find it nearly inappropriate to see these photo’s in a thread which is about the qualities of a camera. It is not meant that way I’m certain, but it comes near to commercializing the hard lives of these people.

I took care of my friend's cats whilst they were away for a few days. I was just getting ready to do a portrait of Murphy when a bird flew onto the railing just outside the window. I couldn't get him to look back at me no matter what I did. His brother, Riley, was much more cooperative.
