hirohhhh Posted September 14, 2023 Author Share #21 Posted September 14, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) Six months later, I still have this lens mounted on one of my M cameras at all times (literally). The only drawback is its lack of a hood, which can sometimes lead to flaring. I'm considering getting a hood, even though it would negate the primary advantage of this lens, which is its compactness. Is this the right hood for this lens? https://leicastoremiami.com/products/leica-12504-lens-hood-with-cap-for-summicron-m-summilux-m-35mm-lenses?variant=34254704705667 Also, if this is the correct hood, it not only adds significant size to the lens but also appears to prevent mounting a filter simultaneously. And it doesn't come with a cap, so I'll need to purchase a generic one. I really appreciate the design of the hoods on the newer Summiluxes, which can be screwed in and out. Do you have a hood mounted on your Summicron-M 35mm lens?

Yes - I use the 12504 since 1969 on my V2. There are now very good copies of the Leitz 12504 as much cheaper prices, if you want to try one. The hood will fit over some 39mm filters. Here's my v2 Summicron with a B&W 39mm filter, and the 12504 hood fitting over the filter and clipping on the lens. Welcome, dear visitor! I purchased 12504 and snapped onto Summicron-M 35, but it’s rotating and I cannot fix it to one position. Is it supposed to be like this? Is it supposed to be like this? There is nothing to lock it to a certain rotation position except friction of the spring grips in the groove, so it's possible to rotate it. but in 50+ years of use I've never found that to be a problem, by positioning it so a cutout is open on the VF corner it stays that way for me. Of course, I don't hold the camera by the hood, which would not be a good idea - I don't really touch the hood once it's in place.

I found on this forum that some replicas do that, so mine may be a replica. No wonder I paid $100 for it, although the build quality is great. Not a huge issue, but it would be nicer if it stays in a position.

Based on serial number I figured out it's v3 and made in 1973. I had an opportunity to shoot a bit this afternoon and I can say it's a good lens. I have the newest Summiluxes 28 and 50 1.4, and in comparison to this one, I can't see a much of a difference, except the obvious one stop. Can someone point out what would be improved in the newest versions, and how does it compare to the same lenses made in Germany? What would I get if I paid $3000-4000 for the new one, instead $1000 for this one? I mean. You couldve saved more with a used Voigtländer Ultron 35f2. Then ask what do I get by buying a summicron. The Canadian versions used plastics to lower costs. So I never considered them. I wanted the German versions. Personally I had a specific need for a 35mm that was small and had little to no noticeable distortion. The one for that is the latest 35f2 ASPH v2. So I spent my money on that. If you don't have that requirement there are plenty of 35mm lenses that will do the job. Edited June 22, 2024 by crons

I’m sort of nervous getting one, due to lanthanum being in them, perhaps, but I really love the rendering of the v3
