With the Sigma 14-24 you also have the option to use rear filters, which are very small

This is true for ND filters, but I don't remember a polarizer for this lens. I wish that someone would make a polarizer, EF adapter like the Canon one.

You could use Wratten-style gel polarizers behind the lens, but it would be very impractical!

Just before the thread drifts completely off-topic (am still waiting for someone to tell us, again, how great their 75mm APO-Summicron-L is…)

A big advantage of the 19mm Elmarit-R (V2) is that it can be easily adapted to different cameras. I routinely use mine on the Sony full-frames and have even used it on an APSC body.

The new 21mm Summicron's MTFs look really good, but you're stuck with L-series cameras.  Fine cameras sure, but you cut yourself off from everything else out there. And FWIW, the MTF for the 19mm V2 ain't no slouch for a lens which is half the size of the yet-to-be-released 21mm 🙃

As to issues with using filters… I find the built-in turret quite useful.  Use the blue filter indoors under tungsten or fluorescent light, and the orange filter for B&W or adding punch to colour "golden hour" shots. About 20 years ago even heard of someone sending their 19mm off to a technician to have the turret filters changed to his favourites (Note: you cannot change the ND filter is the lens design requires this to be present)

For those who want to use other filters, the adapter ring from Duclos looks like it will do the job (haven't used it myself)

There's a cutting mask in the 14-24 box, you can buy a sheet of polarizer, use the mask to cut it and use it as a rear filter. Not ideal, but it can be done.

Nisi has a full frontal filter set for this lens, but it's expensive and huge

What are your thoughts on the 21mm Summilux?

Have never used it, so cannot comment.  I can imagine there would be off-axis image degradation if you use the lens on non Leica cameras.  The full-frame Sony's die if you go wider than Leica M 50mm.  (Off topic, they do however work well with my Voigtlander Nokton 40mm or Ultron 28mm)

As noted above I bought the 19mm R v2 so I could use it on basically anything.  There are mirror clearance issues with off-brand (D)SLRs, but this isn't a problem anymore with mirrorless digital.  Currently I'm a Leica SL (typ 601) and Sony A7RIV and A7RII and A6300 kinda guy.  Am waiting to see what the yet-to-be-released SL3 or Panasonic S5ii will be like.

Or might jump ship altogether and go Nikon again (used to be a Nikon guy in the 1980s-2000) or (gasp) Canon.

That's the beauty of using R lenses.  BTW same story with the 28mm R v2.

> 75mm APO

Dangle the bait and… (sigh)

Even if it works without vignetting, I’d be worried about lens flare. The 14-24/2.8 DG DN without filters is already bad enough with lens flare. I can’t imagine what putting a big filter in front of a giant bulbous front element would do.

I own an SL2-S and 24-90 zoom.  I am going to Turkey and Tunisia and want to shoot Roman ruins and will be bringing tripod, filters and trying to be as precise as possible.  I plan on using a CV 10mm Super Wide Heliar for specific purposes,

Since the 24-90 is part of your set of lenses, and since you also plan on using the CV 10mm lens, I'd go for the 19mm Elmarit-R lens if I were you. A 21mm lens is in my view too close to the 24mm focal length which you already have covered, whereas a 19mm lens falls nicely into the gap between 10mm and 24mm. I own and use a 19mm Elmarit v2 lens, and have always been more than impressed by its image quality and rendering in general. It IS a very good lens, and as others have pointed out, it is quite a bit more compact than the upcoming 21mm SL lens, which no doubt will be a terrific lens, too.
