Advertisement Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Hi mwalker649, Take a look here Leica M8 is a cheap and plasticky camera!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 15, 2007 Share #22 Posted October 15, 2007 You guys are all forgetting that it's usually "what have you done for me lately" when in this boat. I discussed the cost before buying the camera, while I was putting money in the cookie jar. When I showed her the recent NewYorker magazine article (which she found boring -- we need to get a life) she said "5,000, hunh?"

smgorsch Posted October 15, 2007 Share #24 Posted October 15, 2007 When I told my wife about the M8, 3 lenses and new computer to process the images, her reaction was less than enthusiastic. Interestingly, though, we've reached the age when quite a few of our acquaintances are either having affairs, thinking of having an affair or getting divorced. When my wife started to object to my buying spree, I implored her to think of this as the prinicipal manifestation of my "mid-life crisis"; she immediately retracted & urged me to buy whatever I wanted:) . LichMD Posted October 15, 2007 Share #25 Posted October 15, 2007 My wife and I fully discussed the cost of the M8 and my desired lens prior to the purchase, and though she didn't get it at first she has noticed a change in my photography. Now we simply have the issue of lens lust which she struggles with.
mustafasoleiman Posted October 15, 2007 Share #26 Posted October 15, 2007 I just deleted a bit of the 8 and made it look like a 6... Works like a charm! And if you have a truly observant spouse that might notice the glassy bit in the back, just mask it with tape or use a Luigi's case... mine won't notice the difference, but some might because it's shiny... pklein Posted October 16, 2007 Share #29 Posted October 16, 2007 I'm fortunate in that my wife usually encourages me to buy what I want--and what I really want, not the cheaper substitute that I won't be happy with long-term. I consider myself very lucky. I'm the one who agonizes over whether it will cost too much, if I truly need it, blah blah blah. Stefan referred to the Midlife Crisis Defense. My wife and I have a little joke: Whenever I start having guilt pangs about having bought the M8, I say, "Well, it's cheaper than a little red sports car. Or a mistress." I'm fortunate that she finds that funny, too.! --Peter, who still can't believe he's old enough to have a midlife crisis.

fordfanjpn Posted October 16, 2007 Share #31 Posted October 16, 2007 I was actually very lucky because I was originally considering the R-D1s at about half the price, and my wife convinced me that if I did that, I'd eventually want the M8 anyway, so I might as well get the M8 to start with and not waste money on the R-D1s. On the other hand, she was rather surprised to find out that lenses are extra! And by the way, I still wouldn't mind having an R-D1s! Bill
guidomo Posted October 16, 2007 Share #32 Posted October 16, 2007 I'm lucky my father-in-law has been a Leica fan for a long time. So my wife grew up with this stuff around her. That being said, she was still surprised how much it costs....
Ecaton Posted October 16, 2007 Share #33 Posted October 16, 2007 And now, where are the female M8 owners who could not tell there partners how much they spent.......................
mustafasoleiman Posted October 16, 2007 Share #34 Posted October 16, 2007 do you seriously believe you could possibly out-stash your own wife? not in a thousand years ;-) Well... a couple of months ago she had a small accident with another car. I asked her what make the other car was, and she said... blue... So I hope that her power of observation concerning mechanical things is just as good for cameras... mustafasoleiman Posted October 16, 2007 Share #35 Posted October 16, 2007 And now, where are the female M8 owners who could not tell there partners how much they spent....................... Considering the fact that most ladies hold the purse, I would imagine that more than "...could not..." it is a case of not being bothered to tell the children (us). FastFashnReloaded Posted October 16, 2007 Share #36 Posted October 16, 2007 My wife said when seing my M8, what is that old thing???? no autofocus??? no zoom???? what is that?? a camera??? And guess what??? She is now my ex wife :-) this is true story !!!! Leicas don't take care of you when you are ill, talk to you, go to the football game with you, or keep you warm at night unless the battery is about to explode. I'd rawther have a companion than another camera.
FastFashnReloaded Posted October 16, 2007 Share #37 Posted October 16, 2007 And now, where are the female M8 owners who could not tell there partners how much they spent....................... Perhaps they are waiting for an M9... Most (not all, but most) women I know want a tool that works (much like an Apple computer), and don't have a lot of patience with trying to fix a manufacturer's quirks. Guys will put up with a lot for a pretty face, but women want something that will be there, consistently and reliably. Stereotyping? Sure. But stereotyping based on lots of observation. wparsonsgisnet Posted October 17, 2007 Share #38 Posted October 17, 2007 Well, I took some pix at an office luncheon yesterday. One guy said, "No flash?" When I posted on our net later another guy said he was surprised because he thot that old-fashioned camera certainly took film. He asked me what kind it was but didn't know the name. However, he's in the minority of camera users, because more and more people recognize the M8 and Leica than not. At a recent wedding, where I was an ancillary photographer, another ancillary pointed out to the primary that I was using a Leica and she was not. Some guys always know to say the right thing. fielden Posted October 17, 2007 Share #39 Posted October 17, 2007 I have given strict instructions to my children that if something should happen to me, Don't let your mother sell my cameras for what I told her I'd paid for them.!!!!!!
simon_hughes Posted October 17, 2007 Share #40 Posted October 17, 2007 A few months ago, I sold all my Canon gear in preparation for moving to the M8 (and I'd previously had a pair of R-D1s). While I was telling my wife about how I had recouped enough money for one body and lenses and I would use my M4-P as a second/backup, she remarked, "Why don't you just get two? I hate to think of you mucking about with film again." And, yes, she knows how much they cost. Love that woman!!
