Being conscious about mindless use of the Q2

Sometimes when I play around with my camera and I shoot photos of random stuff at home or simply too many of the exact same shot and then I notice that and stop myself because I don't want to put "unnecessary mileage" on the camera. Am I weird?!

So my questions would be:

1. Do you guys ever experience that? 

2. Are there any estimates of how many shots the leaf shutter of the Q2 can handle?

In the past 7 weeks I took over 3000 photos on my old Q (not Q2), and it seems fine.  However, perhaps it would be a good idea to be a bit more selective about what you shoot.

Most of my images are mindless…  I think it may have to do with Anno Domini. 🙃

Try shooting a moving kid. Have fun culling trough endless similar pics while „putting mileage“ on the shutter 😅 Worry less, shoot more.

I don't think many of us have to fret about wearing our Q2 cameras out.  In the above example of 500,000+ photos shot, if a person shoots 1000 photos a week, it will take 10 years to reach half a million shutter clicks. 

The vast majority of Q2 shooters will have traded for a Q3, Q4 or Q5 long before their Q2 reaches its tenth anniversary or its 500,000th shutter click.

As for overshooting, I try to get good coverage of subjects that I shoot - different angles, different framing, different apertures for different DOF, etc.  There's a very foggy and imprecise line between getting good coverage of a subject and overshooting - but since we are not paying $34.00 American for a 36 exposure roll of Fuji Velvia 50, it's not really much of an issue. 

Download your files, edit and go back and take a second look a week or so later.  If it seems like you overshot, delete the excess images from your hard drives.

Holy Elvis on a bundt cake - $34.00 American a roll!! 🤮  That makes our supposedly overpriced digital M cameras seem like the deal of the century!!

Welcome to the forum or should I say welcome to the Leica weird forum.

The sole reason I limit my shooting if ever is the time involved sorting through all the images later when I'd rather be out shooting.

Mindless is not a word I’d use. I prefer you’re working the subject. All angles. Vary light. Try macro. Up, down, around. Out of focus. Blue, B&W…

Keep working it then come back tomorrow with fresh eyes. You may discover something new. 

Cameras are amazingly durable today. 
if you’re worried about the shutter switch to electronic shutter assuming no moving objects in the scene. 
Enjoy and stop worrying about the camera.

The only thing mindless is keeping the Leica collecting dust in an overpriced man purse that has "rob me" embroidered on the outside. There are always going to be potential photo opportunities that if you don't take them, you ponder, what if I only paid attention to my intuition? I recently took a Route 66 road trip, and I had MANY shiny object stops and turnarounds to get a shot...even if I didn't see the same vision afterwards, I'm not sorry for any of them. I do agree it's best to be a deliberate shooter and put some thought into composition and lighting, angle, etc. For example, if I stopped to photograph a retro roadside sign or truck with patina, I thought about what I did or did not want to show in the background and maybe took 2-5 photos of each subject bearing that in mind. I think taking 46 photos of the same thing is where the approach can get careless and redundant. Don't apologize for using it, just work on your own discipline and keep it fun.

One use I have for the Q2 is reading my outdoor gas meter. Otherwise, at my age, kneeling down on the path with reading glasses on to try to see the small numerical display is a real physical challenge. But the autofocus of the Q2 is just the job😋!

Using tools until they wear out means that you maximize utilization, and I would much prefer that than keeping a camera "new" for years.  As long as you derive pleasure from the process, it is not mindless.

I am not a heavy shooter, maybe because of my "style" and also because after decades of analogic... I still have the way of thinking first, shoot once I think I got my shot. But a camera is made to be used, so each one must feel free to use the gear as much as he feels, Leicas are forever.

My Q is being used by someone in my family (I gave it to him as I purchased the Q2) who shoots "anything that moves" all the time. Don't know how many shots it has but it is still going great.

Patrick Domingo (link to YT video) said he took over 2 million shots with his Leica Q. And never had it serviced.

That's like buying a car an not driving it. Enjoy the camera and shoot as many as you want. The leave shutter in my father's Kodak Retina from the 1950ies still works.
