williamj Posted January 5, 2023 Author Share #47  Posted January 5, 2023 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I couldn't identify this lens but does anyone think it might be a fat Elmar 9 cm F/4.0? Photo by Genevieve Naylor in 1946 when HCB was in New York. This is a Getty Image and if that is not allowed I will delete. Welcome, dear visitor! The diameter of the front lens element as visible on the photograph is much too large for an f4/9cm lens. This looks more like a fast 5cm lens to me, and it likely is no Leica lens either (at least I would not know which one it could be).

People have suggested a Zeiss Sonnar among the lenses he used and it's too early for the Nikon 50 F1.5 and does not look like it

I always expected he would have had a Summitar since it is recorded he had a Summar but this is the first photo to that effect. This links the Summar to the Summicron V1. I've just looked on the internet for images of a period correct Zeiss Sonnar it has that fat body to it. The photo is a little blurred but definitely reasonable. Giuliobigazzi Posted January 5, 2023 Share #56  Posted January 5, 2023 To me the lens in #43 and #46 looks like a wray unilite but those were m41 mount, could be a special one off piece I guess. Welcome, dear visitor! Giuliobigazzi Posted January 5, 2023 Share #58  Posted January 5, 2023 (edited) This lens would need an m41-m39 adapter, adding thickness to the lens, and seems to be have just that on post #43 having said that, the Wrayflex first appeared in 1947 so if the photo is from 1946 then something doesn’t add up Edited January 5, 2023 by Giuliobigazzi

williamj Posted January 5, 2023 Author Share #60  Posted January 5, 2023 It’s got mitred edges not round edges so that’s not a Leica. But I’m not surprised, he himself said he kept coming back to the Leica, which tells you he was always trying new stuff.
