The black version is quite reasonable. The rendering is more organic as compared to the APO variants where the fall off is more abrupt

grahamc Posted December 19, 2022 Author Share #24 Posted December 19, 2022 (edited) Having shot with both yesterday I think this is going to go the way of selling 90:2.8 Elmarit-M (395g) & 90:2 Chrome (680g) and purchasing a 90:2 black (485g). The size/weight penalty of the black cron versus the Elmarit is probably worth it for what I consider to be a more special rendering, especially wide open. But I will surely miss the size and convenience of Elmarit-M - it's a very nice lens indeed. If I could justify having multiple 90s I'd keep it around Edited December 19, 2022 by grahamc

No!!! Ditch that 200g bag of Sherbet Lemons from your bag, Graham, and keep the Silver-Chrome Summicron!................ As stated if forced to choose - head ruling heart - I'd take my Summarit but if I wanted a 'Mandler' palette and an extra 1/2 stop of light-gathering possibility I'd never choose the Black v3 over the S-Chrome. Never. They might render the same(*) but the S-C really is something rather special even if merely in a superficially tactile sense. Best wishes for your own solution! Philip. * Actually mine don't...

Philip. * Actually mine don't... Sherbert Lemons - now that's a real classic. Too hot for them over here of course, especially in a bag ! Phillip my good friend, this isn't helping ! Mainly because I know it's true. The SC is a thing of beauty, but what I'm looking for here is a user. I can live with letting the SC go, or may hold it a little while longer after the Elmarit-M. Couldn't agree more about your Mandler-esque comments ..... I've been testing many of these lenses alongside my pre-asph 50s and 35s to see how they match up, and the 90:2 is certainly the best fit, for me at least. The Elmarit-M is quite close though and designed by mandler of course. But I imagine it sits somewhere between pre-asph and ASPH in the way it draws. Overall happy to have landed up here after looking for some time for a 90 to join these pre-asph 35 & 50 lenses. KarimelKrunch Posted December 28, 2022 Share #32 Posted December 28, 2022 those are beautiful kits, in both chrome and in black, wowza! I've got a 90 Tele-Elmarit-M "thin", but I keep thinking about switching to the 90 Cron V3. However, I've been concerned about the weight and getting sharp images wide open with the Cron using the rangefinder. How are you getting on with the Cron? Do you find it difficult to get your subject in-focus wide-open and in close range, or do you only shoot at F2 at longer distances?

I think the 90:2 v3 is best used at F2 and haven’t had many issues really. The lens renders beautifully at that aperture so I’ve found it well worth any missed shots versus the 2.8’s I tried on the way 👍 Edited December 28, 2022 by grahamc 1

Stating the obvious but you will find the lens big and heavy versus the T-E thin I didn’t really take to the T-E images despite liking light lenses and also the generally pretty good feedback about the lens on the forum Edited December 28, 2022 by grahamc 1
