usccharles Posted October 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) every other Leica product has exceptional form and function (even my M8!) except for one thing. my nocti plastic hood that doesn't stay in place, is flimsy, and just plain sucks. its one of their most expensive lenses and i don't get why they made it so unfunctional that way.. atleast have the hood click in place so it don't retract back all the time... i've heard people using a 62mm step-up and screwing in a screw on hood. any personal experiences? i'm seriously considering this since i don't plan on ever selling my Nocti, and i much prefer to take the nocti without a filter on, but the hood is never really good enough to protect the glass element from fingerprints, etc, and i would like some better solution than the current hood. thanks and cheers
Advertisement Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Hi usccharles, Take a look here why is Nocti Hood so... bad?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted October 9, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 9, 2007 I agree, the hood is very poor and when I get mine back from Solms, I'm going to look at a screw-in hood after removing the plastic one which, as you say, is flimsy and marks just by looking at it. Nikon make a couple of hoods, HN-22 and HN-24 which would need a 60-62 step up ring, only question is how much they obstruct the viewfinder. The HN-22 would the the closest equivalent to the Nocti's effort.
ChrisC Posted October 9, 2007 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2007 every other Leica product has exceptional form and function (even my M8!) except for one thing........ Charles - Oh dear, There's a saying in UK politics that 'a lie is half way around the world before truth has got it's boots on'. I was in such a good mood too; but I cannot let such a piece of blatant mythologising go without comment because Leica does have it's fair share of poor design. I really, really, would not wish to repeat a list again, but felt obliged to challenge your sentiment. And no, I absolutely am not suggesting you are anything but honest in your opinion - I just strongly disagree with you. ............... Chris
ChrisC Posted October 9, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 9, 2007 That is all purely subjective..... I'm really grateful you drew that to my attention. For a brief while I actually believed I was being objective. I had better take my boots off! ............... Chris
Eoin Posted October 9, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 9, 2007 I wouldn't say it's that bad, functional perhaps, protection of the front element I think not. It's much better than the earlier hood design with the pins which are reputed to catch in things or break off. Either way, it's there, I have a UV/IR on the front element and the camera tends to hang nose down.
