bscott Posted October 8, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted October 8, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm sure this has been asked before but I would like to get the latest opinions. I need to use a fine grain 400 speed slide film for photographing birds and would appreciate suggestions.

stunsworth Posted October 8, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted October 8, 2007 It's a while since I've shot ISO 400 slide film, but I used to use Provia. Very impressive for a film of this speed.

Although its a subjective judgement, Provia 400 seems finer 'grain' than the Kodachrome 200 I used to use, and the Sensia 400 seems much the same. I haven't tried any Ektachome recently. norbertnl Posted October 8, 2007 Share #4  Posted October 8, 2007 If fine grain is your priority, my vote would be for the new Fuji Provia 400x. Finer grain than the 400F, sharp, beautiful colour balance and tonal range. Best, Norbert
Photoskeptic Posted October 8, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted October 8, 2007 You should be happy with the Provoa. Â I don't want you to think I'm stealing this thread, but back in 1989 I found some 800 Agfa slide film that was awesome and then I never could find any again. Does anyone know what that film was called?
Mark Antony Posted October 8, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted October 8, 2007 Another nod for Fuji 400X it has extremely fine grain for the speed, I have a test here: Photo Utopia Mark

Mark Antony Posted October 8, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted October 8, 2007 Agfa 1000RS was quite nice, grainy but sharp, with a subdued colour balance that erred slightly to cyan. I don't know about the Ansco (I think they got divorced from Agfa in the 1940's) but Scotch (3M) made some 1000 and also 640T (tungsten) which was OK but not as good as the Agfa. I'll post some examples if anyone is interested. Mark

bscott Posted October 9, 2007 Author Share #11 Â Posted October 9, 2007 Thanks for the timely help. I'm going to try some Provia 400.
Mark Antony Posted October 10, 2007 Share #12  Posted October 10, 2007 I´m interested.  Well here it is Agfa 1000 RS  Kind of subdued magenta/cyan/blue, grain was quite prominent, would have been good under fluorescent light possibly?  Didn't use too many rolls although I think it was the fastest 120 slide film available at the time.
