... It could go on like that for months and months. So in theory you could buy a M8 in March built in March and one today built last week and the SN's could be 1-2-3-100-400-whatever number apart. It's a crap shoot as to SN's and build date.

Thanks for the explanation; so antiquated it is. I’m surprised that Leica doesn’t consider a more controlled system whereby units returning for service, could me analyzed much quicker by leveraging serial numbers with production codes.

Regards,

I wouldn't call it antiquated. Leica does know which serial #'s were allocated at what date. Leica has been doing that since the M3 or before. If you look at websites that can tell you when approximately all M3's were built it only gives you the year, and sometimes a certain batch of serial #'s span 2 years. Some years there were 3-4 or more serial # batches allocated. Some year only 2.

At this time we are hung up on the month each specific M8 was built in. In years to come it will be OK to know just the year it was built. So you have a 2006 or 2007 and someone else has one that was built in 2008 or 09.

As long as it works is all that matters.

If that's the way it works, it's certainly bizarre.

My reply was an analogy. I have no idea if the hot shoes from one batch serial #'s gets mixed in with hot shoes from a previous batch of serial #'s. I was just supposing.

But as it has been stated many times on this forum the serial #'s are allocated in batches of X size and when the units are built # 3 of that batch could have the last allocated serial # and # 567 could have the first # of that batch. It all depend on which hot shoe was grabbed out of the bin for that particular M8.

Yeah I know; this is going to bother me for the rest of the week.:(

Daniel, if you're worried for the M8 you're waiting for having the new CCD board, you shouldn't worry if it has firmware ver. 1.108 installed.

As this firmware is not (and won't be) available at Leica's Web site (like ver. 1.094), only Leica can install it. So, after their upsetting email, if you can put your hands on a body with firmware 1.108, you can be sure it has the new hardware.

On the other hand, if you wait too long and a new version of firmware (1.20 as I was told by Leica) common of all bodies come up, you never know if the firmware update was made by your your dealer (for instance an old 1.102 or 1.107 to ver. 1.20)

Actually, I special ordered a 1.108 version. I realize it will not be anything significant, but I just figured since it was due out around the same time that I committed to purchase; why not go for the later production run. More to the point, I was just somewhat mystified by how Leica issues serial numbers in batches, whereby no real control system is in place.

Well,

I've just returned from the distributor. I've been graciously provided with a loaner, while my cam makes its first pilgrimage to Solms.

My M8 would be returned within 30 days, So I was promised. We'll see!

Anyway, I'll let you guys know what the elves will have fixed when I get it back.

Thanks to all who have helped me with this situation!

Good job getting a loaner. That is pretty exceptional.

If indeed they do allocate in batches, it doesn't necessarily mean that there is no real control system in place. There is probably a database that indicates all the particulars of production of that specific number camera.

Explaining the Leica rep that I was probably the only press photographer in Belgium working with an M8 on a daily basis surely must have done the trick...

BTW I noticed that this camera, which I take to be an official demo cam, has noticably stiffer detents on the on/off switch. Way better than my camera.

It's still running 1.102 as well.
