Philip, do you find that the built-in lens hood on the 75 f/2 is long enough? I have that lens and find it to be excellent, but I worry about the short hood. I'm afraid that I'll get some stray sidelight that will cause trouble.

...

Tim, in a way, I share your concerns about the effectiveness of the lens hood. I am not at all sure that it is all that effective in controlling extraneous light especially when the lens is on the M8. But then I think all standard Leica lens hoods are optimized for film cameras rather than digital cameras with the smaller capture zone. On the other hand, I have had fewer flare problems with the 75 than I have had with the 35 so I tend to be less concerned about the 75 lens hood's effectiveness in controlling extraneous light than I am with the 35. I think (experts please feel free to differ) the shorter the lens, the more propensity for flare. I have written on another thread about my concerns about the effectiveness of the 35 lens hood when on the M8.

The main benefit of the lens hood on the 75, to me, is the protection it gives the front lens element and/or filter. When the IR-cut filter is screwed into the front of the lens, it is really "out there" unprotected without the lens hood. Of course, Tim, longer would be even better if it could be engineered.

Note that the filter adds length to the lens, of course, but that extra length is is covered up when the lens hood is deployed. This is different from the 35/2.0 (and I think the 28) where the filter is between the lens hood and the lens and therefore adds length when using the lens hood.

I've recently posted an image called "Monolith" in the landscape category on the photo forum. That was shot with the 35mm f/2.0 summicron. You may wish to have a look at that. It is exceptional, and very compact.

Great picture, Sharookh. I just got a call from the dealer telling me that my 35 Summicron is back from Leica with 6-bit coding. I can't wait to put it back to use.
