The changes were as follows:

- Reduced front diameter allowing use of a smaller filter (55mm --> 49mm) and less intrusion into the viewfinder window

- Staggered Depth of Field markings similar to those on the WATE

- Revised mechanical design to improve the focal length setting click stops and to make the action more positive.

- Focussing tab added to the focussing ring.

The optical design was said to be unchanged - the lens coding for both versions is the same.

Optically identical. V1 uses 55mm filters, v2 49mm. V2 has a focusing tab, v1 does not. V2 had dof scales, v1 does not. Ergonomically v2 is said to be better than v1,

V1: Leica Tri-Elmar -M 28-35-50 Asph lens for all M cameras - (eBay item 280157246545 end time Oct-07-07 20:00:00 PDT)

V2: Large Image Adorama Sku#LC2850MU.jpg

I have a v1 and use it quite a bit.

I think there are two variants of the first version, with E55 filter, and a distinctly different 2nd version with E49 filter.

I do not know the differences between the variants of the first version.

The E49 version has depth of field engraving, and a tab for focusing.

All versions have identical optics.

This is noted more often (2 variants of 1st version). I think it relates to a the black (type 11809) and silver/chrome (11894). The latter one is rather rare. Both these 1st versions are identical to my knowledge. BTW, the 2nd version is referred to as type 11625.

You can find all 3 of them in Leica's list of coded lenses (current and discontinued), downloadable from Leica's web site.

Except for the chrome version which is rare, I do not think that this lens (1st or 2nd) will be of that much interest as a collection piece.

I have owned both, and for a user the 2nd version is preferrable. Its 49mm filter obstructs much less of the viewfinder than the 1st version with 55mm filter. Additionally, the different focal length settings snap more distinctly into position and the danger of selecting an intermediate (and useless) position is reduced.
