I love my M3 :-)

I also don't understand why I barely use my M6 and M7 after the purchase of my M3. Maybe because 95% of my shots are B&W... Perhaps the outside attention I get when it hangs on my neck in a Leather Eveready Case.

You should see mine - it looks as if it had been used on an oil rig to drill holes.

Good theft protection, though...

Plus, the small side bag contained the original sun shade and flash adapter cable. Not bad for 20 Euros....

Probably the only thing I would change on the MP would be to include these little ridges round the viewfinder brightline rangefinder windows. All the warning you need that your fingers are straying across the windows. I know flat "looks" better, but...

I'll second that. I have more lens cloths in various trouser pockets, shirts and jackets than a little old lady has handkerchiefs in her cardigans!

Well, not exactly a black one (hey, black ones look like the chrome ones, just black :)), but I sure love using this combo. Old meets new, so to say...

very late M3 too, just serviced by Solms?

Indeed, I had it CLAed in Solms a year ago (it sat on a shelf for years before I bought it), and kept that service tag (well, part of it anyway) as it is useful in pulling the camera out of the everready case, some of which have quite a tight fit.

P.S.: Ronald, I've been to Potsdam this year, too. Great place.

Andy, Sanssouci on a Sunday with that weather we had yesterday (KAISERWETTER) a horror for serious photography (except streetshots;) ). Nevertheless i shot two rolls of slidefilm with M3 and MP.

I too love my 50 year old Leica M3 Double Stroke. I picked it up about a year ago--EX+ from KEH. It was so clean and spotless I had to order one of Lugi's Conac half cases.

Today it still sits in the half case with a 90mm Summicron and a 1.25x magnifier attached. I have put around 50 rolls of XP2 Black & White film through it since I've had it.

I also use a Gossen hand held light meter or my Minolta Spot Meter-F

The M3 get two rolls up

I love mine;

A SS from 1959 with a touch of Voigtländer. The best viewfinder ever made by Leica. Bought it 8 years ago in my local camera shop. A little pinhole in one of the curtains was repaired together with a CLA under warranty

Since I made this picture I have Tom Abrahamssons soft release added. A great little addendum!

I use an MP3 which has the ridges and believe me it doesn't seem to make much difference... :(

How do the M3 frame lines compare to the M2? After purchasing an M2 I can see the day when I will either purchase a second M2 or possibly an M3.

The M2 is a 35mm finder. (the largest frame being for a 35 mm lens). The M3 has a 50mm finder e.g. the largest frame corresponds with a 50 mm lens. Enlargement of the M3 finder is nearly 1:1 When using a 50 or 90 mm you can actually look whith both eyes open.

Advantage of the M3 finder is the larger view, hence more accurate rangefinder. Besides, through its optical design you don't have problems with blank outs in extreme light of the rangefinder patch.

Disadvantage is that one has to use auxiliary finders for anyting wider than 50 mm. In the old days (the days of th M3) 35 mm lenses were made with "goggles", specially for the M3. These changed the 50 mm view into a 35 mm view.

I have got a 1961 35 mm summicron (the 8 lenses type, made in Wetzlar) that I still use today, not only on the M3 but also on the M8.

To give you an idea I have attached a picture of my M3 with the 35mm summicron. It looks kind of cloggy but in practice it isn't, it just works fine.
