punktum Posted October 5, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I own two M8 cameras. This error, according to Leica, only happened to me, so far. Or let´s say I´m the first who sent a camera with that error into service. It occured while I was continious shooting (DNG only, portrait session, reportage...) suddenly a gray picture appeared on the monitor, everything like middle gray though the buffer was not at its limit. The camera was loading and didn´t stop. When I shot again another gray picture appeared. I was waiting and the camera was loading and loading and loading.... I tried to switch it off but I coudn´t. The only thing that helped was to take of the akku. I put it in again imediately and everything worked fine, but the images of the last continious shooting were gone. This happened to me with different akkus, different cards, two different cameras, different situations. It is not reproduceable. I can´t force it to happen, It just happens always at continious shooting. It´s pretty seldom, 4 times in 6 month as a pro but it seems to increase. So, am I a unique M8 killer or what? Shootist Posted October 5, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 5, 2007 Try formatting your cards in FAT format, instead of FAT32. There was a FAQ about that. The FAQ's can be downloaded form the Leica website.

wparsonsgisnet Posted October 5, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 5, 2007 Frank, I have had a similar problem, except that it was the name of the jpeg that appeared on the viewing screen and I was not shooting continuously. My take on the problem was that my SD card is faulty. I have retired that card, as this kind of thing has happened twice with that card. By all means format in the camera, retry the card, but I would make sure everything is good before using the card again. Also, I recommend switching batteries as soon as only one segment shows in the indicator. The M8 is sensitive to whatever low voltage is present during the last 3rd of battery life. cam2000 Posted October 6, 2007 Share #15 Posted October 6, 2007 What is an "akku?" Thanks, MItchell Mitchell I would say it comes from the French word "Accumulateur électrique" meaning a stored power source.... battery!

Iron Flatline Posted October 6, 2007 Share #17 Posted October 6, 2007 Akku is the word we use in Germany for rechargable battery, as a differentiator to the regular disposable batteries.

punktum Posted October 6, 2007 Author Share #19 Posted October 6, 2007 This happen to me also last week during a continuous shooting..... the screen turn a light grey and the reccording red light was flashing for ever so I had to do the same remove the battery and lost those images. I am working with the latest firmware (1.107) and my card is always formated in the camera after I downloaded the pictures.... my card is Lexar Prof 2gb. Hello Jacques, at least we are two in this small world. That´s exactly the same that happened to me. But you use lexar cards, I´m using SanDisk. So the problem has got nothing to do with the card. It is camera related.
punktum Posted October 6, 2007 Author Share #20 Posted October 6, 2007 A gentleman from Leica called me. He checked the camera, everything worked just fine. He tried a whole day to reproduce the problem, made about a thousand images and everything worked still fine. His conclusion is, that this must be a simple camera breakdown. Every computer crashes sometimes. I can understand that. My 5D´s sometimes show up an error as well. He insured me that there is actually no damage to any part of the camera. As this occured to me very seldom, we agreed in leaving everything as it is. He is sending me the camera back. But he offered me if this is going to increase, they will change the main board or cpu by chance and see if it is getting better. So far good news. But this shows again the M8 has a stunning image quality, because of the lenses. The body itself is realy not at the edge of what a digital camera should be capeable of, to weak, to slow. So Leica please, give it more power. And with the next M whatever let your contract photographers be the beta tester and not your costumers. I don´t want to play it, I have to work it.
