hankg Posted October 3, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 3, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) How many shoot the M8 with both eyes open. With a 1.25 magnifier I find focusing is easier and my view of the world unimpeded by not having to squint looking through a peep hole. It is what makes the M for me. It sometimes takes a second for my brain to adjust to the slight right eye, left eye difference but after that it's smooth sailing. The only improvement for me would be thinner less obtrusive frame lines that are more accurate and correct for parallax as you focus. Hopefully LCD technology will make it possible. I'd also like not to have to use the magnifier. It would be great if you could switch between 2 or 3 finder mags like a tr-elmar lens with the finder. I think the point of the M finder is to not have a 'camera interface'. To feel like you have nothing between you and your subject. It's really the reason (combined with it's fairly compact footprint) I use the M8.
Advertisement Posted October 3, 2007 Posted October 3, 2007 Hi hankg, Take a look here Shoot with both eyes open?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ArtZ Posted October 3, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 3, 2007 Hank, I've just posted something for you concerning shooting with both eyes open: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/35350-reflections-m-full-frame-sensors-including-2.html#post369749 Hank, That's possible right now. I shoot with my eyes open from 28mm to 90mm! You only need the MS MAG 1.35x magnifier from Megaperls Webshop I have one sleeping in one of my M8s and I can keep both eyes wide open On the other M8, I have the MS MAG 1.15x which I use with the MATE PS: I find the 1.25x Leica Magnifier is not comfortable enough for keeping both eyes open. 1.35x is perfect! hankg Posted October 3, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted October 3, 2007 PS: I find the 1.25x Leica Magnifier is not comfortable enough for keeping both eyes open. 1.35x is perfect! I had the 1.35 Megaperls but lost it. I'd assumed you would need a 1.0 finder to shoot this way but I am finding with the Poon 1.25 magnifier (brings the M8 up to a .85) i am using now it's not really a problem for me. I was using the Leica 1.25x and +1 diopter correction to shoot with both yes opened. When I got the 1.35x (which brings the M8 up to .92 and diopter correction is adjustable on the magnifier), I find much more comfortable (than 1.25x), especially under low light conditions. I will order a second one (spare) when they will become available again. .
Shootist Posted October 3, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 3, 2007 I've tried that and don't like it. I shoot all cameras with one eye closed. I do the same when shooting a rifle with or without a scope or shotgun. About the only thing I shoot with both eyes open are my pistols and revolvers. Daniel Ortego Posted October 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 3, 2007 ArtZ, Well, I stumbled across your post and the Mag 1.35 looks interesting. I see that it’s due out again around the end of October although I wonder how us USA folks can order it. Based on the infor. from the link, it appears to be restricted to “US” in the U.S. Is this truly the case or am I reading too much into this? Regards,

ArtZ Posted October 3, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 3, 2007 Daniel, Hank, If my memory is good, Dirk Rösler [dirk_at_unicircuits_dot_com] (from Magapearls) posted here in August you can order it even when you live in the US if you specify in your order that the magnifier is for a telescope or other optical device. I suggest, Daniel, to send him an email and he will explain how you can get it delivered in the US. He's a nice and seriuos guy (I've never met him) and I got both magnifiers in France from Japan just in 4 days. My Leica 1.25x mag has not been used since then. TIP: If you get the 1.35x, I recommend you to buy in a harware store an O ring rubber you use on (water) tabs (0.3 €). You should insert the O ring between the diopter correction part and the part you screw to the camera. This will tight up both parts reducing the risk of changing dioptrer correction on normal use and to avoid getting dust. Besides, the magnifier looks much better. Welcome, dear visitor! The diopter drove me nuts as it was always moving at the worst times.
andybarton Posted October 3, 2007 Share #10 Posted October 3, 2007 For those of us who are left-eye shooters, it makes no difference whether the right eye is open or closed.
ArtZ Posted October 3, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 3, 2007 For those of us who are left-eye shooters, it makes no difference whether the right eye is open or closed. I was a left-eye shooter (I'm still on (D)SLR cameras) but not on the M8 since I'm using the 1.35x magnifier. It's really "easier and my view of the world unimpeded by not having to squint looking through a peep hole" as Hank said. .
Jack_Flesher Posted October 3, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 3, 2007 For those of us who are left-eye shooters, it makes no difference whether the right eye is open or closed. I see we have that in common Andy! Interestingly, Guy is also a left-eyed shooter, but in his case he often uses it in an odd fashion, and I'm still trying to figure out how he manages: Guy and his M8: Closer in: (And no, he's NEVER gonna live this one down!) ,

Daniel Ortego Posted October 3, 2007 Share #14 Posted October 3, 2007 Damn, look at the size of those hands! He makes the M8 look like something of a charm on a bracelet. Regards,
JeffreyTotaro Posted October 3, 2007 Share #15 Posted October 3, 2007 Nice Panerai Guy is wearing too. We have that in common, but I do shoot with my eyes open, it works better for me. I shoot left-eyed because it is my dominate eye. I can leave my right eye open even if the camera were not in front of it. Not sure which is your dominate eye? Make a circle with your thumb and index finger held at about arms length. Look through it at some defined object with both eyes open. Now close one eye at a time and which ever eye is open when the object still remains in the circle is your dominate eye.
