sharookh Posted October 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I finally took the plunge - with the purchase of the new 24/2.8 Asph after having reviewed the Zeiss lenses as well. I finally had one picked up from HongKong - burnt a huge hole in my pocket! Much smaller and lighter than what I thought it would be, I'm ooking forward to shooting with it. Advertisement Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 Hi sharookh, Take a look here Took the plunge with the 24/2.8 asph. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted October 2, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 2, 2007 You won't be disappointed with it. It's a superb performer. If you are buying a IR cut filter and decide to go for a b+w one bear in mind that the slim filter doesn't allow the lens hood to be fitted. The standard one works ok. sharookh Posted October 2, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted October 2, 2007 Steve - Just ordered the Leica UV/IR from B&H. Hope to receive it shortly. I believe B&H is shut for 10 days so I expect it to be shipped once they open around October 6th. What I'm finding disconcerting is the FOV in the viewfinder. I really have to work my eye around it. Also, I find that the intermediary 35mm framelines come on to bright. I wish the brightness could be subdued. Otherwise, my initial impression is that it is sharp with wonderful contrast. And, I love the hood. Pretty cool all in all. Best sharookh
marknorton Posted October 2, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 2, 2007 If you want to subdue the brightness, try putting Scotch tape over the slotted window; will affect all the frames of course but with a 24, what you see in total is more or less what you'll get. The 24mm is a cracking lens, hope you enjoy it.
erl Posted October 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 2, 2007 Sharookh, If you ever took a 'hot chick' to a party saying " my babe will be the hottest there" and then found a stunner standing in the corner, just eyeing you off:eek: then it was probably a 24/2.8: rather than a 36/24/36 ! say no more;)

roubaix Posted October 2, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Considering the same myself. Is this the widest lens that brings up frame lines? Any picture of the lens with hood? Couldn't find any on Leica or B&H. Thanks, Peter
wparsonsgisnet Posted October 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 2, 2007 Sharookh, I use the inexpensive, round, metal hood that is available on eBay for my 24 and 35. They are convenient, sturdy, and intrude less into the viewfinder. I don't use a lens cap with these lenses, anymore. Congratulations on getting this magical lens. Post some wonderful pix. sharookh Posted October 2, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted October 2, 2007 Peter - Shall take an image with the lens on the camera with the hood on and post tomorrow - its 11pm in Mumbai! You could even Google "Image" the same. Yes, the 24 framelines are the widest on the M8. Not too sure whether they come up on the film Ms. Will check tomorrow on my M6. Cheers Sharookh
carstenw Posted October 2, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 2, 2007 The 24 framelines on the M8 are the first, I believe. The old cameras don't have it, not least because the 24/2.8 Asph was the first M 24, created in 1996.
charlesphoto99 Posted October 2, 2007 Share #13 Posted October 2, 2007 I picked up a mint copy of this lens with finder in about 2000 for $1250! It wasn't an especially popular lens for Leica back then. It's great on the M8, but profound on the film bodies. I'm biased though as true 24mm is one of my favorite focal lengths and i've owned top ones by Nikon and canon and this just beats the pants off them. Even though I prefer the 28 cron on the M8 because of the frameline issue, extra speed smaller size etc. I'll always hang onto the 24 and use with M7 (and M8 when i get it coded). Enjoy! I wasn't brave enough... and then it is this huge hood that I personally hate... so I found some excuses and I bought the new VC 25mm f/4 instead. I know it can't compare to the mighty Elmarit-M 24mm but it isn't bad at all. And it is so tiny... Oh, well... later maybe...
