photolandscape Posted October 2, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am interested in buying a black M8 baseplate. Does anyone know where I could find a nice one used, or, where I could find a new one and what the part number is? TX.

Does anyone know where I could find a nice one used, or, where I could find a new one and what the part number is? TX. This post of course creates a question... What the heck happened to the one that came with the camera? Or is this a cosmetic thing, you want it for a silver M8?? The curious need to know LOLOLOLOL! glenerrolrd Posted October 2, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 2, 2007 I am interested in buying a black M8 baseplate. Does anyone know where I could find a nice one used, or, where I could find a new one and what the part number is? TX. I had the same problem. Left my original baseplate in the box from the handgrip and it got stored away with my winter stuff(not lost just not practical to retrieve until next month). I enjoy the Luigi cases so I needed an original baseplate . I tried for months to buy one ..any condition used ..as I don t really need it long term ..just have a nice case sitting. You can get a new one directly from Leica Service Parts in NJ ..its $300. Call Dave in Parts. A dealer can order one for a lot less and of course charge you whatever they like . I tried 5 different dealers ...only Popflash responded with a price at $300..which is probably fair just seems excessive for my purposes. You can get a Leica grip for much less..so that maybe an option.
marknorton Posted October 2, 2007 Share #6 Posted October 2, 2007 Only Leica would charge more for a replacement base plate than the handgrip costs to buy. Now, where's that cotton wool?

Now, where's that cotton wool? The reason might well be different suppliers. If the handgrip guy is cheaper than the baseplate man, but cannot supply the quantities needed, one could get this effect. jaapv Posted October 2, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 2, 2007 There is a nice businness model here: Buy a handgrip, sell the baseplate for the price the handgrip costs, have the handgrip for free....
misha Posted October 2, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 2, 2007 you could have mine for free. its just collecting dust in new york. i'll be there in about 3 weeks.

I don't think that is a good idea, to sell it or give it away. If you have to send the camera in for any type of repair you will need the original, and or a standard, base plate. jaapv Posted October 2, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 2, 2007 I don't quite see why that should be. Leica will accept the handgrip baseplate just as easily if a camera comes in for repair. The only problem might be if you sell it at some later point of time.
Philinflash Posted October 2, 2007 Share #12 Posted October 2, 2007 I don't think that is a good idea, to sell it or give it away. Furthermore, it distorts the market for used Leica merchandise which could get you in serious trouble with Solms.

Well for a reply to the above quote and to jaapv. I send in my M8's, when needed, in the original box it came in with that box in another box and packing materials. That way Leica has no chance of saying it was improperly packed. You can't get the body in the original box with the grip base. Also if I ever sell either of them in the future it will include the original base plate.

Wait until the M9 comes out. Then you'll be able to buy an entire M8 for $300.
ptruman Posted October 2, 2007 Share #17 Posted October 2, 2007 "You can get a new one directly from Leica Service Parts in NJ ..its $300" So what would the total bill be if you were to buy a duplicate of every piece or sub-assembly of an M8? Not to mention assembling it... Mind you, you would have to be rather careless to loose them one by one.
glenerrolrd Posted October 2, 2007 Share #18 Posted October 2, 2007 Sorry I wasn t trying to start a leica is over charging for spare parts discussion. But I spent way too much time on this because I bought a new Luigi case and then remembered that my original baseplate was in Florida. I posted three different WTB offering $200 and got no takers . I have found in ordering several replacement parts for both my M8 and the R9/DMR that replacement parts directly from Leica sell at list. Dave was very clear that the dealer network could order the parts and would get dealer pricing which in this case is much lower. Its just a PITA for a dealer to order a baseplate and nobody I tried wanted to order it . The difference in price is similar to the auto industry and many others spare parts don t turn over like assessories .nor do they have much competition and therefore they have higher prices. Fortunately I will be able to retrive my original next month.
