slow display adjustment

I do not know if this topic has beeen already discussed on this forum, I made a research, but i didn't find any thread.

The problem I see on my M8 display is that it takes 3 (or more) sec. to adjust/focus the display viewn when I push PLAY and I move from a pic to the next one. Practically the image after 3-4 sec becomes more bright and more clear than before.

I noticed this since the last firmware update 1.107, but as I used the M8 with the previous one for very few days, I'm not sure if this problem happened also before.

I think what you're seeing is the camera adjusting the RAW file to compensate for corner vignetting etc. If lens detection is set to "on", the camera takes a moment to perform the software adjustment of the image. What you're seeing as the image getting lighter is actually just the corners getting lighter to compensate for vignetting.

 

It is a bit slow, I agree.

It's been like that on all 3 M8's I've had. It is normal and all do it.

 

It makes no difference whether the lens detection is set to off or to on with my camera. It is very slow, the last camera I had which was this slow was the Nikon D100 and that was a long time and a few cameras ago. The question is can this be improved upon without having to buy the fabled M9? Or should we all learn about life out of the fast lane???

maybe a faster card might help, I use the Sundisk Extreme 2gb, shoot only raw, and the time to set the image is a fraction of a second.

 

 

What the OP is talkinig about is when you hit the PLAY button AFTER the image has been written to the card. The first image that comes up sometimes looks not so good and then 2-3 seconds later the images Jumps and it becomes clearer. This happens with every image you display on the camera LCD screen. It really has nothing to do with how fast or slow the camera writes the image to the SD card.

And that is, IMO, JPEG first, then processed RAW.

This happens whether you record in Jpeg or RAW or the combination of both. The beast is just SLOW, lens selection off or on I have fiddled about with every combination it is SLOW. I am resigned to the fact that in some respects, mechanical and optical Leica takes some beating, but in the digital sphere they could have gone down to the local internet cafe and hired some people with a better appreciation of what £3000 buys in the real world. BUT it takes some great shots...!!!

That image processing, which takes place when viewing on the camera's LCD is slow (to our standards) is due to the technology Leica used for the M8. To be more specific, it is software based image processor with standard hardware, where other brands (Canon, Nikon comes to mind) use dedicated hardware to speed up processing.

 

The reason Leica implemented sofware based image processing is that it is easier to change the processing algorithms after the fact. Also, developing dedicated processing chips is costly and only pays when selling high numbers. It is the better option for a manufacturer that is not (yet) experienced in this field to use a software image processor.

To overcome the limitation of slow speed, the display shows the internal JPEG first, while working through all (raw) data for a better image you can enlarge for example.

1. use a "Class 6" SD card, it is much faster than those "Class 4" cards (it is 20MB/sec vs 5MB/sec). I am currently using Toshiba's 2G white card. I used to have their 2G blue card. The white card is much faster. Their 4G HC SD card is supposed to have the same transfer rate, but M8 does not support the HC SD standard, yet.

2. the software approach will ensure your M8 will not be obsolete when a new chip is released, you can just upgrade the firmware, as opposed to upgrade the whole machine.

 

 

now, when can we have a firmware 1.5 or (better still) 2? it has been a year now... focal length selection, better auto WB, faster display speed, support for third party IR filter

I don't think the SD card has nothing to do when you make the PLAY: writing has already been done, but now there is the reading speed that can have some role (it depends on how the software treates the file in the "read/process/display" routine...a problem well known to software developers...) : I think it is so for I made a test with my phone card (32 MB - "slow") and the PLAY function seems to be a little slower tham my usual 2GB Ssndisk... but wasn't a scientific test, for the phon card was empty (took two JPG pics) and the Sandisk was about half full... reading speed from a mass storage device is generally dependent also on this issue.
