Well I just saw on the german internet page that Leica introduces the first change to the M8 - it will be released with a new motherboard requiring also a new firmware (1.108), which will not be for download, as this firmware only adresses the capabilities of the new motherboard.

 

Guess now its clear why the price has been raised.

 

Lets see if the firmware of the old M8 will continue to be updated or soon be really outdated.

 

Lucky I sat by the fence so far.......

It ain't a Mk II camera, Leica have changed a component that requires a new version of the firmware. Both versions of the camera will be supported in future.

 

This will be my last message on this subject as I've had one groundhog day too many.

If there isn't any difference in the specs of the "motherboard" there is no reason to call it MKII. This is common practice in the world of computers, cars, airplanes, etc. You don't want to be dependent on one supplier for you components. If Leica would not have told us about this not-to-be-release firmware no one would have known.

Let us hope the new version is even better than the first. I look forward to see what they have done. This is only a good thing. But if having the latest version is a meaningful objective, then you'd better remain on your fence, because next year there will be another one, then another one etc.. Meanwhile we are out there taking pictures :D

Before we lock it up. I'll contribute one factoid. I've looked at a copy of 1.108, which was sent to a few beta-testers. The ONLY visible difference is that it will load when the ccd-board (not the motherboard -- the M8 doesn't have such a thing) has id = "2". Initial cameras had id = "0" and the revised post Nov 2006 cameras have ccd-board_ID = "1". The firmware file is exactly the same size (to the nearest kB) as 1.107, so at most a few initialization parameters have been reset.

I guess thats what happens if one goes on vacation - comes back and only reads this on the Leica site...... should have checked the forums I guess..... well I still hope its a hidden MKII - but thats something we will only get to know once they hit the streets and we see pics online to compare.

This means the code needed to run the updated CCD board has been in place in ver 1.107, now with 1.1.08 they're only adding a switch to turn it on ... when the board is found to be old version run subroutine A if it's new version then run subroutine B.

 

If this is the case, running the new firmware on older cameras will prove nothing.

Hummm...

 

That means "Sudden Death Syndrome" (T2 update) was a problem on the CCD board?

The T2 update was a replacement of transistor 2, some of which had passed superficial tests, but were out of spec. As such, the revision 1 was actually just bringing some board into spec which were out of spec. Revision 2 is meant to be for the replacement of some component chip which was no longer available. What is it with all the conspiracy theories around here? Who was it who knew how many changes were made to the M3 in its lifetime?

Believe me there are at least 6 beta testers on this forum and none of them heard of a MKII. We went over this already and the final word is nothing to talk about.

Well I just uppgraded my M8 to the M8-SNOB edition.

 

It's an all hardware uppgrade, not related to software at all.

 

It costs 8USD and provides a better grip for your thumb.

 

I'm thinking of copyrighting the name M8_MKIII. Man, Leica will pay me Millions to get hold of the MK3 name! I can now quit my day-job :D :D :D

Based on this info the 1.108 cams are Mk3, the ones that have been in circulation since late last year are Mk2, whereas those that were recalled are Mk1 :eek:
