No, I did not sell and decided to keep it. The dollar is extremely weak at the moment against my own currency, and this is a bad time to sell.

... Ivar ... you're by sure a serious economist... but let's tell the TRUTH between ourselves... is HARD to decide to separate ourselves from our beloved items...:) ... I did it once only (*), years ago...a IIIG body with Leicavit... and anytime I see one (even only on pic hereby) I feel something bitter in my heart :o ...

(*) to be precise...apart the Noctilux 1,2 (really, IT!) I sold in 1989... but this is a different, funny story of my youth...posted it months ago...

Yes, this is not an easy decision. Nobel prize winner Daniel Kahneman has given us theory to understand this behaviour.

There is a lens out on eBay now, more than $11000, but mine is in better condition with box!

Yes, this is one of Boris´ prices from another galaxy... Sometimes I ask myself if he really wants to sell. But we can be thankful that he holds the LEICA-prices up.

yes, that's it: his prices are out of this world; it seems collectible items (same with vintage guitars, collecible amplifiers such as Dumble) show a growing tendency of reaching for another galaxy; the first electric guitar I bought as a student in 1968 (a gold top Gibson Les Paul Standard) that would not sell for 8.000 EUR five years ago is sold in the US for about 25.000 $ these days; I often ak myself who would pay such prices; the last Noctilux 1.2 I saw at Ebay went for about 4.000 EUR, but it is was of course not mint; I'm glad the Noctilux 1.0 does the same job for less than half that price (I have the older "Made in Canada" version with the detachable hood); I'll keep my 1,4/35 Aspherical and my Gibson guitar, though, to buy me a place in an old people's home some day....

"The price of a collectible depends on the mood of the buyer and the seller at a certain moment" - another McKeown's quotation; someway Lapalicien... anyway, I don't think this market is at the point of luridness in which "fake" prices are made public to maintain the market at high levels (it happens elsewhere...) : if someone buys a mint Nocti 1,2 at $11.000... we can say that a mint Nocti 1,2 today has a value in the range of 10K$.

Would you pls show me your lens' photos?

my email: superebc@gmail.com

DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS GUY FROM CHINA. I had a deal on the ZM25 and the hood with him on Ebay and he sent the lens but not the correct 25/28 hood (he sent the 21/25 one). Since it was pointless to send it back, I asked that the correct hood be sent instead and I will pay for the new one. He acknowledged his mistake and will pay for the postage (not the courier). I paid him and that was the last of it as it was not via Ebay (but Paypal direct). Numerous emails to him and he gave some excuse about being sick and never replied after that. Now it is with Paypal dispute.

HE IS NOT HONEST AND CAVEAT EMPTOR.

We discussed the market price for the Noctilux 1.2/50 a short while ago. I watched with interest how high the one being offered by Westlicht in Vienna would go in their auctions - and you know whar - 16 000€ excl. premium. This lens costs the buyer close to 20 000€.

Mine is in about the same condition - but the box is more worn.

Psychologists Daniel Kahneman (Nobel Prize 2002) and Amos Tversky have taught us the "disposition effect", which crudely points to a behaviour anomaly, whereby a person will not sell something he/she owns, even for a price they themselves would not be willing to pay for the same item. This is what I teach my students, anyway, and I find myself in the same situation, but there is a limit here someplace.

Hello Ivar~

You find yourself in an interesting dilemma.

Perhaps there is another way to look at it.

If you love your lens, and love the images from it but aren't shooting with it, perhaps you could enjoy it by knowing someone who values it a great deal is using it to bring these images to life?

Hi, Luigi. It's a long time we didn't "exchange". After reading your post, I went back with nostalgy to the archives of my Fontenelle Collection, and found some photos of "my" Thambar nº31223, complete with red tube, filter ant shade (! : ). Unfortunately, I cannot attach same here : the format (bitmap) is denied access. If you let me have your Email address, I will send these photos to you.

Ciao.

I think that the price of a Nocti 1,2 has not to be put in relation with the list price of the present Nocti 1,0 ... they are different THINGS... If one looks for a 1,0 is surely mainly FOR USE, and maybe you search for a used item (whose price, IS related to the list price of the new)... but if one searches for a 1,2 is mainly for is a collector's item... not that it is a bad lens (I had one many years ago... a sad story...), but if I would have to choose between shooting with an old Nocti at 1,2 or a new Summilux asph at 1,4 ... no doubt for the Lux... and I suspect that for a M8 user if one has the frenzy of 1,2 there is an elegant Voigt that I doubt performs worst than the venerable Noctilux. Collecting is different... I'm very proud of my Thambar 90 (with filter... but no hood  ) and wouldn't sell it for, say, 2500 US$ or so, but if sometimes I use it... just for joking.

Collector's market has economics of its own... Thambar is a "limit case", but you have still good user lenses that are valued less lenses that one likes to use for affection only (see, for example, a 50 Summicron of the '60s Vs. a 50 Xenon in GOOD conditions)

But, don't forget : OUR RULE is "ALL old Leitz lenses are anyway usable !!!

Since your note stirred so much interest, I went back to the archives of my former Fontenelle collection (at its peak, 30 years ago, it totalled 117 bodies, 304 lenses and more than 1,000 accessories), and found some photos of "my" Noctiluxes 1.2 (nº2254428) and 1 (nº2750456 and 2854267). I submit same here.

My note stirred so much interest that I need to sit down a day or two and think about this. Best offer so far $9000! Regrettably, the dollar is super weak at the moment and being an economist, I don`t think this will change any time soon.
