vic vic Posted September 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) hi.... rollei has a zeiss lens - sonnar 40mm for their rollei35rf (which seems to be very much like voigtlander R2)....... the lens is tiny with f2.8..... anybody femiliar with this lens ? i suppose there should be no problem to put it on leica M since both zeiss and voigtlander lenses can be used with M too......... that sonnar40mm also seems to be M-mount like any others........ wizard Posted September 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 26, 2007 ...that sonnar40mm also seems to be M-mount like any others........ No, it is a screw mount lens as far as I know, but it was sold with an adapter ring in place. Andy
Sandokan Posted September 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted September 26, 2007 That's funny Vic, I looked only last night at this camera and lens... whilst looking for notes about the 600x and 66SLX cameras. It said its a "M-mount" and I also wondered if the camera would have frame lines for other Leica lenses (like 35, 50, 75)?

This will tell you about it :- http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=284 I looked at it once, restyled Voigtlander R2, but twice the price in the UK. Not many sold so I expect it will be a collectors item! Gerry
sbelyaev Posted September 26, 2007 Share #5 Posted September 26, 2007 I got a black one about a week ago. Nice lens. No chromatic aberration. Wide opened the corners are soft. Closed to 4-5.6 rasor sharp, without visible distirtions. OOF is good.

zapp Posted September 27, 2007 Share #7 Posted September 27, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Rollei is only branding products these days. The Rollei RF camera is a branded Voigtländer. Same for the lenses. All great Rollei lenses are Zeiss lenses. If you want a Zeiss lens, go for ZM. If you want Voigtländer, go for Cosina/Voigtländer. The Rollei lens may have a slightly different look, but no reason to spend a lot of money on it.

The Rollei lens may have a slightly different look, but no reason to spend a lot of money on it. The Sonnar 40 is a completely different lens to all CVs! Optical. The mechanics are made by CV, optical design is made by Zeiss (30 years ago...), glass comes from Schott and the lens is assembled in Germany. It's quite rare, there were less than 1000 made. It is a very fine lens! The look is not only slightly different, it has the typical Sonnar look, sbelyaev described it pretty good. Over all the lens is better than a Summicron 2/35! vic vic Posted September 27, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted September 27, 2007 zaap...... i just saw the prices on b&h and the rollei doesnt seeem to be that expenssive, compared to voigtlander and actually cheaper than "alternative" zeiss lenses (35 or 50 which are not exactly tiny )......... voitglander has 40mm 1.4 , but no need for speed for particular reasons i concider the 40mm lens....... ok , i understand that zeiss makes the design and voigtlander/cosina that mount etc, but who makes the lens ?? not rollei (francke&heideke specifically, which is among the best makers) ? ya stan's discription is sounds as very good lens...... oh he also says no visible distortion, i guess field flatness....... bavaricus ..... u also have expeirience with it........... how is the flareing of the lens ? ........ Bavaricus Posted September 27, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 27, 2007 bavaricus ..... u also have expeirience with it........... how is the flareing of the lens ? ........ YES, i have one!! A year ago i compared it to the Minolta Rokkor 2/40 (=Summicron 40). The Sonnar was fully opened less prone to flare!! I Another effect i could see: fully opened the light meter showed only a half stop difference between these lenses! Stopped down to 4 it spotted the same! Quite puzzling isn't it! The Sonnar 2,8/40 meanwhile is my reference, cause i like the sonnar-touch very much. Please excuse me, i can't post some pictures due to the lack of a functioning scanner... vic vic Posted September 27, 2007 Author Share #14 Posted September 27, 2007 andy thanks..... rollei german factory is great, they are serious makers with top quality that can be seen only from very few makers like linhof leica alpa sinar ...... reiner thanks......... one question...... what M-mount adapter comes with the lens ? 50 or 35 ? or it is possible to choose the prefered one when u buy? I got M8 today and tried it with tri-elmar @50mm, summilux 50asph and Rollei sonnar. Rollei is sharper. I'm gonna try to take some pictures of a brick wall tomorrow...) From what I've noticed sonnar's images are very solid (expept for peripheral softness @ f2-f4). It is hard to explain the pictures just look good. Bavaricus Posted September 27, 2007 Share #16 Posted September 27, 2007 reiner thanks......... one question...... what M-mount adapter comes with the lens ? 50 or 35 ? or it is possible to choose the prefered one when u buy? You're welcome, vic! The lens comes with a adapter which brings up the 50 Frame. It's very well made brass CV-Adapter. I changed it to a china-made 35. It's a real small difference to the 40. No problem when you subtract a little bit in your brain
leitz_not_leica Posted September 27, 2007 Share #17 Posted September 27, 2007 Too slow, IMHO.
vic vic Posted September 28, 2007 Author Share #18 Posted September 28, 2007 steve...... ya agree - it is slow indeed, but it is tiny and not that slow for what i need from it (daylight conditions)... but ya, normally i use very fast lenses.... stan....... first of all congrats with your new camera ... enjoy it man...... :-) inform if u have some intersting issues with it......... reiner... ya, i prefer 35mm frames too..... i think it is better since the 35mm (at least in mp 0.85) supposed to show about 40mm view at infinity....... in relaxed viewing, the whole 0,85 window can be used for 40mm but 50+75 frames disturb i think. Bavaricus Posted September 28, 2007 Share #19 Posted September 28, 2007 Too slow, IMHO. May be, but not always For low light situations i have my FSU Jupiters 3 or 8. Fine old instruments for available light and they are Sonnars too ...
