OK, it's the Leica forum, and we can do niche and pointless better than almost anyone else. So, in that spirit, let me try to push the boat out.

I've noticed that recent lens releases from Leica seem to favour a more discreet, maybe even apologetic, lettering around the front of the lens. I'm not sure I'm a fan of this new direction. It's been happening for a long time.

I consider the E58 Noctilux one of Leica's finest looking lenses. This is due, in no small part, to the inscription around the front of the lens. It's bold, and widely spaced. Reminds me of the white-painted lettering around the sidewall of a 1970's American muscle car tyre. It's bordering on confrontational.

But, down the decades, it's all got a bit more subtle. And we wind up in 2022, with the second version of the 35mm Summilux FLE.

We know Leica - every tiny detail is carefully considered. The re-issue of the 50mm 1.2 Noctilux harks back to the original lettering, and that's a current lens.

The current font is called "LG 1050" and it was specially created for Leica, just like all good companies have them tailor made.
The font evolution is a normal thing, everyone has its own preferences. I am madly in love with the script Leica logo, but could not say which font used on the lenses is better or worse. They all seemingly perfectly fit the periods they were used in.

You have a point. Most things do reflect the times they are from. The 1960's and 1970's were very unapologetic and optimistic times. We were literally reaching for the stars. The creation of the gas-guzzling Concorde aeroplane was celebrated. Today there is a degree of pessimism and minimalism. Maybe no bad thing.

I read somewhere that the colour of cars can reflect the times. During periods where economies are growing, cars are purchased in bright colours. In more straitened times, cars are bought in more sober shades of grey.

This looks like my 50mm 'Cron v4.  Made in Canada loud and proud.

Well, the lettering on my 50mm f1.2 seems to have fallen off... ;)

I like the early lettering, pity it doesn’t say Elmax.
