Shutter can’t release after waking up the camera.

Tested with: Fresh battery, DX mode, no soft release, lens cap off, Daylight with aperture priority at F16

Process:

1. Switched on and advanced once

2. Left the camera alone for half an hour (camera entered sleep mode)

3. Half pressed the shutter release to wake up the camera

4. Targeted a object and fully pressed the release, LED showed 1/250. Shutter jamed

(After 4th step, I could hear a quite “click” but  it wasn’t  as loud as a normal shutter sound. Advance lever stucked and shutter release was not responding.)

5. Pressed the shutter release a couple more times, heard an proper shutter sound. Film advance also worked after that

The camera is mad because you left it alone for half an hour.

But seriously, if the problem is one-off, you have nothing to worry about. If it is repeatable, it will get worse over time. In that case off to service with it.

It happened almost every single time

Does it happen only if you let it ‘sleep’ for a long time? If you wake it up just after it goes to sleep - so not waiting a long time - is it ok?

is it ok if you turn it off and on again and try to take a pic before it goes to sleep?

The first M7 I bought took photos all by itself.  After putting the camera down, whether turned off or on, the shutter would release.  After a few visits to the factory under warranty it was replaced.

Ling, it sounds to me as though the only thing to do is send it to Wetzlar.

After a successful shot:

  • 1 min standby mode:
    • No stuck
  • 3 min standby mode:
    • No stuck
  • 30 min standby mode:
    • Stuck
  • 1 min power off:
    • No stuck
  • 3 min power off
    • No stuck
  • 30 min power off
    • Stuck

Looks like it needs a trip to the Leica.  Make sure to be very clear what happens, how to recreate it.  Otherwise they will just look at it, turn it on, see that it works and send it back charging you $500 w/o fixing anything...
