Digital Leicas have messed me up

I've had a few digital Leica cameras, removing the base plate to access the battery + SD card is a nice quirk, I really like it. I'm very used to it.

So now having a couple of film M cameras, I need to pay very close attention to what I'm holding... I was out shooting on my M3 the other day, came back and sat down at a table chatting to someone and mindlessly opened the base plate of my film camera without first finishing / rewinding the roll. 

I'm so used to taking the base plate off and taking out the SD card or swapping out the battery at the end of a shoot, I just did this automatically even though I know I had film in there. The cameras are just so similar, there's barely an indication that I'm using film vs digital. 

I know I wouldn't make this mistake on a Rolleiflex, it's just the mindless muscle-memory from using an almost identical digital Leica 😅

Salvaged some of the shots, some even look kind of interesting with sprocket hole shadows.

Except that it’s on the right side on my M10-R and on the left side on my M7 with a much bigger knob.

When I realised I had likely ruined the film, I pulled at the spool which popped some of the film out, then I thought better of it and put it back so I could re-wind it and see if anything was left. I think this is what caused those marks. 
 

Knowing what I know now, a good deal of the film is fairly well protected, wrapped tightly on the spool so if there’s ever a next time I’ll quickly close the plate and keep shooting!

No wonder why i always misfit my m2 baseplate everytime! So used to my m10r

Slap a sticker on it, or used permanent ink pen to write “FILM - DO NOT OPEN WITHOUT REWINDING” on the bottom.

I did that recently and it does ruin the film. Several shots on the roll have gone ☹️
