Last month I did the NC500 again but this time in the Land Rover. I've now added some of the images to my website and these can be viewed at https://photographybytomlane.com/elementor-2299/
All images were taken with the SL and SL2 with the 16-35, 24-90 and 90-280 SL Zooms.

Love the photograph and the Defender 90. What’s the details on the car?

EDIT: just looked at the trips on your website. Great trips and photographs.

Great photo and Land Rover; Twisted?

No not Twisted. It was built by Nene Overland near Peterborough. They wanted to put the 6.3 litre petrol engine in but I settled for the 3.2 TDCI desiel. Same engine as in the Ford Ranger. It was hard enough arranging insurance on that so I can't think what the 6.3 would have been like. Really happy with it but there is so much torque that it can damage sixth gear unless you're doing 50/60mph before engaging it ..... I know from bitter experience.

Beautiful photos from your trip! Quite the journey. There are so many places I've yet to see.

Some great photos Tom, thanks for sharing them and your trip.  I recognise some of the locations, having spent a week based in Drumbeg (with my 127"LR near 20 years ago) and on various trips on BMW R100RT and later in the Morgan.  I keep thinking I should really take the 90 and spend several weeks up in the Highlands, revisiting some areas and discovering lots not yet seen (or photographed :) ).

Just one question (at least for the present) - do you have extended range fuel tanks on the 90?

Hi Graham, firstly thanks for your kind comments which are really appreciated. No, I don't have extended range fuel tanks on the Defender. We've been no further afield than Europe in it and I haven't found them necessary. I guess the standard tank gives me a range of approximately 400 miles, although I tend to refill it when the fuel gauge reaches 1/2 as physiologically I'd rather put fifty quids worth in, as opposed to £100. (Stupid really because it means carrying that extra weight.)

I first got involved with Land Rovers in 1966 when as a VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) I went to live for a year in Jordan looking after a fleet of LR's for Save the Children Fund. They had three bases in the country at Kerak, Tafilia and Ma'an, plus the headquarters in Amman and from memory about 12/14 LR's including a Forward Control 101. We used to go into the desert travelling from one Bedouin Camp to another, sometimes for up to 10 days. Then we had dual tanks, plus jerry cans on the front of the wings and on the roof rack.

Sorry for the long explanation when a simple YES or NO would have done; I tend to get carried away.

Cheers

Thanks Tom.

Curious as the 127 had 17 gallon tank and I took two 40ltr Jerry cans on the Highlands trip.  Didn't need them (except to keep fuel cost down diesel was 8p/ltr more in Lockinver than at home on that trip).

At 400 mile range your tank must be larger than my 90's (nominal 12 gallons) as I'm starting to look for fuel soon after 220 miles.  Don't think my 200Tdi would manage 300 miles on a tank in general running.

My first was a 1966, but we didn't acquire it until 1973 or 4.  should have bought it back 17 years ago when I had the opportunity.
